Hi Gooheads

I have a few lamps I haven't displayed in ages (I'm really fussy about I arrange my lamps, and some just clash with the others/the room's decor.) I'm saving for oral surgery so ready to sell just about everything I own (everything except the Mathmos lamps! :P)

After thinking and looking at my grande flow it must have a different formula than the rest of the Chinese lamps. It came from a good batch because it came crystal clear, but almost all grande videos i see have at least a descent flow. Did Lava Lite keep the formula from the giants or something?

I was recently at 5 below and saw their "groovy lamps", I didn't get one because 5 dollars seemed too good to be true. I got home and looked them up, they look very clear. The flow isn't all that great, but at 5 dollars I thought they'd be a great deal. I was planning on getting one, but then I found this:…

This really makes me question the safety of those 5 below lamps (or really any other generic Chinese made "motion lamp"). I greatly would prefer getting Mathmos or vintage lava lite, but some of these generic lamps are interesting designs or priced very cheaply. Has anyone ever had one explode while in use? Do you guys think they're safe?
Anyone else have this with their Neons or new(er) Lava Lites? Just when I thought things were improving (and they are, kinda), there's this setback.

What say you?

I'm returning the orange/black as the sticking is quite bad, but keeping the purple. Do you think it will worsen over time? The only other time I've seen this happen is with GooKit lamps I've made.

Well, about 2 weeks ago I picked up a 52oz Lava Lite 'Premier' lamp from Spencer's, purple fluid, yellow goo, plain metal base. The only reason I bought it was I was at the mall and they had them, and I peeked in the package and saw the globe was clear, and it was cheap at $21. So I brought it home, and surprisingly, it has been quite decent! At first, it flowed quiet slowly, and in huge single blobs; very boring. So I brought it home, and surprisingly, it has been quite decent! At first, it flowed quiet slowly, and in huge single blobs; very boring. But since I have been running it 10 hours a day, it has really loosened up and has become quite nice to look at. I did take a video, but I learned the hard way it is a PAIN to try and get proper exposure while recording purple and yellow light. Also, the flow is typically a little better than shown, but I didn't have the patience to wait til it behaved properly. LL must have changed something because the goo does look and act different (better) than the China lamps I have from 2 years ago. It isn't quite the show I get from my USA lamps, but it isn't bad at all. I accidently ran it 12 hours once and 14 another time, and it didn't show any signs of overheating at all in a 70F degree room. Overall, I'm quite satisfied, and this is making me consider ordering a Grande and picking it up from LL's warehouse perhaps (I live 1 mile away from it, in Elmhurst IL). Should I? Thoughts?

Hey everyone,

I'm new to this website, but not really with lava lamps. When I was younger, I got one for Christmas. I think it was a China product (anyway I can't get original Lava or Mathmos brand here in Slovakia :), but that first lava worked pretty well. Ehm, until I let it on for too long, and ruined it. But I didn't know how to take care of it back then. :)

Couple of days ago I bought my second, very cheap lava lamp in the large mall with furniture and stuff. When I opened the box at home I found that the wax was not attached to the bottom of the globe, just floating there on the bottom, kinda rotated. (I was carrying the box horizontally, do you think it was a bad idea? I think that caused wax to move). So I wanted to replace the wax by little movement of the globe, since it wasn't hot, I couldn't do anything wrong, right? :) But I didn't manage it, so I turned it on and waited, if it would fix itself while running. When the wax became hot, the wire went trought it and sticked out, but it settled down eventually. After that it was ok, but little bubbles of air were appearing in the lava. I read these discussions and now I know it's because of the bad quality China products.

So it wasn't that bad with the bubbles, but now there are so many of them! When I turn on the lamp, wax is nearly bubble free and not transparent, but after it's fully flowing, there are tons of bubbles and lava is completely transparent. :(

Can I do something about it? Or return it? Do you think they would accept it?

Thanks.
Pur Water Filter / Clearing cloudy lamp picstag:oozinggoo.ning.com,2009-01-27:1566398:Topic:703642009-01-27T13:49:35.216Zw34paytonhttps://oozinggoo.ning.com/profile/w34payton

I didn't want to spend a ton off money on a filter for lamps I wasnt that happy with so I tried the 14.99 PUR water filter pitcher. It worked out great. Here's how I did it.
I started with my new clear 20 ounce China lamp. The water was milk white before I started and it came out like this.

It only lost a slight amount in the transfer which I added distilled water through the filter to the lamp to top off. Then I did my green lamp. Pretty successful Before and After
Then my red lamp, blue and purple. here's a pic of the blue before and after.

heres some pics showing what i did with the pur filter. When I was done I ran hot water through the filter for a few minutes and the water started coming out clear again so it seems I'm ready to do more if I need to. It did a nice job for 15 bucks. Thank you to the person that posted this idea first!
They didn't turn out too bad for kinda crappy China lamps to begin with. I'm happy with what I learned tonight if I end going back to more high end American made lamps. Thanks for looking!
