Hey All, so the telstar I ordered a couple of months ago started having sticking wax. Mathmos recommended I run it longer, submerge it in hot (not boiling) water etc... Everything I tried didn't help. They offered to send me a replacement bottle, which because I'm in the US, still cost me money to forward here. The bottle arrived upside down in the Mathmos box and it must've been shaken up in transit because it's all cloudy. I've run it a few days now, and it's cleared only the tiniest…

So knowing I don't want to spend another $60 on forwarding another replacement, what can I do? Could I try filtering it, refilling it with a gookit or something? I've got no experience opening these bottles or messing with the fluids, but since I have a spare telstar bottle, I'm willing to experiment. Is there a comprehensive tutorial out there for beginners for tinkering with these?

Thanks!

I've been cycling through heat up and cool down to the best of my ability several times a day as instructed, but the lamp is still quite cloudy.. Can see blurry oozing lava, but can't see through the vessel.

After complaining to customer service, I was sent a free 2nd lamp that just arrived today. It's also quite cloudy upon first view so I'm going to let it settle to room temp for a while.

Any tips for getting these lamps to clear up? Is there a cycling protocol I should follow specifically? I've been reading so many different approaches and hearing conflicting time setups from their customer service.

Please tell me I'm not just screwed with crap quality lamps? :P

Eventually I will try a goo kit for one of the empty globes that I have.

First, I thought I would play around with a globe I recently got off Craigslist. It was blue liquid with white wax; it was so cloudy you could barely see the wax. The wax looked liked it flowed ok, I was home today because the wind chill was -30 and there wasn’t much work going on, so I thought I would try to tinker around with this globe.

I have been reading through this forum on and off for the last week, but I really know next to nothing about rehabbing old globes.

First, I strained the liquid through a coffee filter, thinking it may clear it up enough to use. It made the globe about 10% clearer. Not good enough.

I cooled the globe and poured out the cloudy blue liquid. I heated the wax in the otherwise empty globe and it was disgusting. It looked like a sewer of brown human waste. My guess is the globe was pretty old and the wax had absorbed a lot of dirt and impurities. It was really gross. I almost threw it out.

I went to the craft store and bought a $4 bottle of purple wax coloring. It was supposed to be enough to color 4 pounds of wax. I colored the wax in the globe and let it cool in an otherwise empty globe.

The color was not what I wanted, not pronounced enough.

I then refilled the globe with tap water (I didn’t have distilled and the wind chill was -30 so I wasn't going out again) and I saturated a glass of epsom salt water. Once the globe had ran for several hours and I knew it was at it’s hottest. I began to add the epsom salt water, about half a teaspoon at a time.

About doing this every 5 minutes or so for several hours, the wax began to heave and I knew I getting close to the density where it would float. Once a tower started moving upward, I began adding teeny tiny drops of Dawn dish detergent. The small bottle allowed me to put out drops about the size of a grain of salt. After about 10-15 of these small drops over another hour, the lava broke apart and started flowing nicely! I was amazed I could do this with only epsom salt and Dawn.

Once it were flowing fast and furious, I added more color and used nearly all the wax coloring. That lava goo sucked up that coloring like it was life’s nourishment! It is not very dark, almost black, which is what I wanted.
lavarehab4: You can see the 2nd batch of coloring coursing through the wax. It took more than an hour to fully mix. I was still adding Dawn trying to get the goo to break apart.

lavarehab6: Finally, a little drop of this, a little drop of that, a magic spell or two, and finally, PERFECT FLOW! I never knew you could do this with old wax, tap water, epsom salt, and Dawn. Pretty cool. I’ll be doing this again, for sure. It was a lot of fun. I felt like a mad scientist. lol I have another cloudy globe.
I let it settle for a day after taking it out of the box since it was shipped. the base has the standard 40 watt appliance bulb.

I plugged the unit in the following day, and observed the activity. Being that this is a lamp with a smaller globe compared to the ones from the 60's & 70's,

The lava when moving towards the top of the bottle, it tends to collect in the upper half of the bottle and doesnt drop down all that much. I decided to order a 30 watt bulb and i will try that, to see if i get a better result [i.e. that the lava that goes to the top of the lamp will descend back towards the bottom.], right now one large glob seems to be floating above the bottom where the coil is, instead of dropping down.and one smaller glob tends to stay at the top and it seems to be almost in a liquid form.

Also im wondering if there is anything to be done about clearing the liquid or should i leave well enough alone.

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanking you

I recently bought a squiggle on ebay that needed some work. I have dealt with plenty of cloudy lamps and have had little troubles, but this lamp is different. There is a ton of white powder floating around in it. It is almost like small pieces of wax that don"t want to melt and rejoin the rest of the wax. I am not sure though. I want to filter it, but I would need to buy a nice ceramic filter which could cost upwards of $90. I know coffee filters wont fix clouding, but i think they might be…

I would jst appreciate any input on this or advice from someone who has had this issue before.

So ive mixed up a drop of wax , wich i made out of paraffin wax and brakeleen, with pure VG and water, when i added more vg to the water it clouded up after i shook it, is this the wax floating in the liquid? It has to be that its to dense or could there be salt left in the wax from the last liquid mixture i used. I used a hydrometer and the solutions around 1.075.
So i decided to try my hand at making one of these things. I followed the retro formula and made the wax way to heavy. I had to make the water very dense becuse of this. There semes to be tiny particles of wax suspended in the water and nothing will remove them. The vase i'm using is 6 gallons. Ive done two water changes, the first because the dish soap made it cloudy. I refilled it and now its a different kind of clouds, but still very murky white. It's been run about four times now and is not improving. I think I already know the answer to my question - but is there any chance it will clear with more running? My gut tells me no.
