I bought a green LavaLite today, and it has issues. First of all, the wax doesn't stick to the coil like it should
It doesn't move either, and there is some wax at the top that won't come down. What's the issue here? I'd like to get this lamp working because I want to give it to my mom. Any suggestions?

Greetings, all! I'm new to lava lamps and got my first as a gift about a month and a half ago. I'm rather fond of it now but it no longer works. I'll explain:

During an otherwise normal run I happened to notice that no blobs were forming and the wax had all collected in a roiling dome at the bottom. The wax had separated from about 2/3 of the coil and I figured that was the problem. After poking around here I think this is a result of overheating, since that the lamp is basically new. I've had some success reattaching the wax to the coil by melting the wax and tilting the globe so that the coil flips over into the wax which I then allow to solidify. From what I can tell this might work if I got it to reattach everywhere but I haven't been that lucky yet. I don't imagine this is very good for the lamp but it's the only thing I can do without popping the cap. And that brings me to you.

First, is there a better approach than what I'm doing to rejoin the wax to the coil without opening the globe? Second, assuming there isn't, what steps should I take after removing the cap? And finally, if I squelch my fix-it instinct and replace the lamp I'd like to know what causes the wax to detach in the first place so I can prevent it. I'm guessing it detaches if I run the lamp too long while the ambient temperature is too high. Has anyone noticed the same thing?

And before anyone asks, it's a Lava Lite lamp made in China. Maybe that was the first mistake but I didn't know it mattered at the time. I'm still using the 25W bulb it came with.

My new Mediterranean was in rough shape when I got it. Cloudy, wax separated, and not sticking to coil. The wax is now recombined. The lamp is slightly less cloudy. I can't get this wax to stick to the coil though. I have tried the original, one from a groove tube, and one from a 20 oz. The original was cleaned and soaked in gas for 16 hours. It barely had any wax in it. The groove tube worked better. The 20 oz. has about half of the wax sticking to it. Is this wax shot because it will not…

Hi I am new to the groupe but I do have a question about a new 2013 grande i just purchased . I have tried to run the lamp 3 times and each time the coil shoots out on to the top of the lava and it takes about 5 1 /2 hrs. for lava to melt so coil can sink into place . Anyone else have this happen ? What could be the cause ? Is there a fix ? also once the lamp is flowing it shoots rapid 1 inch bubbles not multi sized and shaped blobs like my older lamps do . the color is great though ! …

First background on the lamp. I bought this century about a year ago cloudy and very sticky. I cycled it first to clear it and then dumped everything after and used degreaser for the sticking. Now it flows and is beautiful, except for on thing. It goes into a state similar to an egg except it is on one side. I have done the method where you spin the lamp and it makes it flow for a few minutes but goes back to the bad egg. It is not the bulb because i have tried frosted, semi frosted, and…

It is not the bulb because i have tried frosted, semi frosted, and clear 40 and even a 60 clear. I think its the coil but i would love some reassurance before opening the lamp.

I used a torch lighter to super-heat the bad coil, then dropped it sizzling hot into my container of melted goo. Something about that worked, when nothing else I tried had. The lamp with that coil is working great now!

I was about ready to GooKit my glitter Grande from Mike, and then I realized I didn't have a spare coil.
Someone in that thread mentioned that the coil needs to be stainless steel. Makes sense. But, the coils purchased from Lowe's were zinc-plated, and someone said those would corrode over time.

If anyone has replaced a coil with something and it's worked, can you post it here?

Does zinc-plated truly corrode in our lamps, and if so, how long does it take to corrode?

I'll update this post after I search the hardware stores here. I am also going to write Magma Tower and once and for all find out how you're supposed to use those mesh screens they now include with GooKits (what happened to the coils?!).
Flow problem, possible coil issue.tag:oozinggoo.ning.com,2011-05-10:1566398:Topic:2358462011-05-10T21:09:22.066ZNickyhttps://oozinggoo.ning.com/profile/Nicky

After some struggles with refilling and making a new lamp I got it to flow and the density seems pretty good.

The problem I have is that after a while of running the wax moves up and doesnt sit on the coil at all, now there is still a lot of globs moving around just no big blob at the bottom that sticks to the coil.

I kept the 40watt bulb I had in so thats stock standard, I am thinking it could be getting too hot but on the other hand it takes a while before its heated...the content is based on the retro formula.

The coil is just a spring and I can't see how it can be broken unless there is some chemical you need to cover it in again after replacing the content or it needs to be scrubbed clean (i did clean the whole thing well with soap and degreaser and rinsed it several times)

So yeah it works well but doesnt form like it use to (a large blob that moves up and drops down again), now when heated well it makes smaller blobs that later on are hovering more on top that anything.

Should I remove some fluid and add more water to reduce salt quantity? or should I add more perc to get the wax heavier?
2) also mentioned was the new bottle not fitting the older bases properly, I really want one of the older bases as I prefer the brushed matt aluminium as opposed to the more shiney ones, but i dont know how much older the matt ones are so i'm thinking if th matt ones are quite a bit older i might have to go with a newer base for a better fit.

3) if the flow will never be good should I just get an older bottle & base?
