Hello Everyone!
I am new to the ozzinggoo website. I have a few good questions/ discussion topics for you all.

1. Diminishing Mathmos Quality

I purchased a couple of violet/red Mathmos lava lamps from ebay (one for a friend and one for myself). They were new and in the box when they arrived but they are absolutely terrible in terms of quality. I placed both globes onto my aristocrat base and noticed that both of them were absolutely COVERED in air bubbles... I am not talking about one here and one there, when I say covered I mean COVERED. The darn things look like they are covered in dust or if someone sneezed on them. There is a UK Amazon review that also makes note of this problem. When I purchased these lamps I was under the assumption that they were the best money could buy. I guess I was fooled by the advertisement of the "Handmade in Britain" YouTube videos. Has anyone else experienced this poor quality in Mathmos Astro lamps? I spent a lot of money to get these lamps to my house and I feel like throwing them right in the trash! I will post pictures of them so you can see what I mean. The flow is great but they are absolutely covered in air bubbles. I am actually hoping to purchase a clear/turquoise Mathmos astro lamp. I hope that when I get it the quality of the glass is not as terrible as the violet/red ones I just got. Since I brought it up, does anyone here have any idea how I can get my hands on a turquoise one? I got lucky with the violet/red ones being posted on ebay, but I wont be as lucky for a turquoise one. I would have to purchase the base and the bottle separately so can anyone help me with that?

2. Old Aristocrat (Air Bubbles and Rust Specs in Wax)

I was given an old lava lamp a long time ago and I have always used it. The liquid is blue and the wax is yellow. The only thing printed on it is Oct 3, 1997 (on the felt at the bottom of the base). This lamp has been around for a real long time and it has been used a lot. The problems that I have with it are as follows:

There are air/oil bubbles in the wax. Even after letting the thing run for a long time, they are present. I have tried to do the "spinning technique" while it is cooling to pop the bubbles but they just come back. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this issue?

There are small black rust specs within the yellow wax itself. These are not noticeable unless a viewer gets really close to the lamp but I would like to get rid of them if at all possible. I have heard of filtering techniques??? Any ideas???

The level of the liquid is low even when running. Should I just open the top of it up and add some reverse osmosis water to it? The very top of the lamp doesn't have a cover I can just lift up to reveal a bottle cap. The whole black portion seems to be glued onto the globe, is this normal or did someone glue it on/screw it up?

The lamp overheats rapidly. I think this is probably the reasoning behind the air bubbles and rust? I only have a 40 watt bulb in it so I am sort of stumped as to why it is overheating. Is the wax just old and breaking down over time? The liquid is clear so I do not think that is the issue. Should I experiment with a dimmer? That is what I have read on here. Can I just use a lower wattage bulb?

3. Desire to Purchase a Turquoise Astro Bottle and Polished Aluminum Astro Base

Does anyone have any advise in terms of purchasing the turquoise astro bottle and the polished aluminum astro base? Can anyone help me with this? As stated stated above, it wont be as easy to find on ebay so how can I get these items to my house? How do you guys get your Mathmos lamps? Does anyone reading this have a turquoise astro?

I hope I was able to hold your attention for the entire post. I have the pictures of the Mathmos quality issue and my aristocrat air bubble problem attached. I hope to read some replies soon!
Reviving a blue and white 1995 aristocratetag:oozinggoo.ning.com,2012-05-21:1566398:Topic:3917842012-05-21T16:34:57.794ZJason Wooleyhttps://oozinggoo.ning.com/profile/JasonWooley

I recently dug out my lava lamp after about 10 years in the attic. It was in a pretty sorry state, and not knowing any better, I did the exact wrong things. Then I found this website and started following the advice I found. Thankfully I am on my way to a full recovery.

Mistakes:

At first the wax was all stuck to the sides and mucked up. I turned it on and after it got a little warm I started swirling it trying to get the wax off of the sides. Then once it was good and hot I really shook it up. As you can guess I emulsified all the wax.

What seemed to work:

I ran it long enough that it completely warmed up and then shut it off and let it completely cool down. Afterward I found it real interesting that about half of the wax had dried at the top and the other half solidified at the bottom.

I next turned it on and when it got a little warm I gently spun the glass by the cap. The wax seemed to stay still as the glass spun around it. As some of the fluid got in between the glass and wax, the plug became dislodged and began to sink. So I turn it off and let it cool down.

Now that all of the wax was at the bottom I turned it on just long enough to melt the wax. Before it sent a bubble of wax to the top I shut it off again. After doing this a few times the wax all seemed to be melted together. I decided to give it a go and the goo finally appeared to be flowing normally.

The next issue is that the fluid was milky in appearance. After a few days of 8 hours on and 8 hours off I *think* it is clearing up. I have read that it might take 2 weeks so I will stick with it.

Remaining issue:

Once the lamp is completely warmed up I have noticed 8 to 10 medium to small bubbles of wax loitering at the top for a rather long time and not really flowing up and down. My guess is that the goo is pretty hot and is taking a while to cool off before it falls. The main problem I have with this is that the bubbles take on a yellowish color from the very top of the bottle. Since it only does this after it has been running for a good while my guess is it is running a little hotter than it should be.

Questions:

Does it matter if the 40 watt appliance bulb is clear or soft white?

Is there anything I can try to keep it from getting too hot?

About Lava Lite

1960 - 1990

Lava Lamps invented. XXXXXX lines introduced.

1990 - 2003

The 1990's seen the birth of many new models from LavaLite. They introduced the Electrick lineup where they paired colored bases usually with a corresponding color globe. The Swirl series was introduced with blue, red, green and purple colored bases in a psychedelic swirl paint job and were also made in rare Haze Swirl models. The Safari series was added with 4 different animal pattern colored bases, some of the Snake models came with the ultra rare brown colored wax globe. The Icons made their way onto the scene as ceramic bases depicting anything from a Devil to Santa Claus. The Aristocrat and Century lines seen the introduction of silver and black colored bases to go with the normal gold color and a new line of globe colors. The Aristocrat base was used for the Americanna model where a American flag wraps around the base and was also used in the special edition "2000" lamp which was chromed and featured a "2000" stamped out of the base cone. Several promotional lamps were also available like Camel and Budweiser, some were geared towards movies such as Austin Powers and TV shows like That 70's Show. The Wizard was introduced which was a similar shape to the old Carlisles but the new Wizard had stars and moon holes stamped in the base, it was available in black, silver, red and blue base colors and a whole new lineup of colored glitter globes. The 250 ounce Giant was released in 5 globe colors available on black or silver bases. LavaLite had a special limited run of 35 lamps on the 4 foot tall Humongo model which was 1,280 ounces ( 10 gallons! ). The liquid wave machines seen a introduction of several new colors and new model sizes.

2003 - current

From 2003 to now Lava Lite has consistently produced very low quality lamps. When manufacturing moved to China all models were discontinued and a new line was introduced including: Accent, Royal, Bob Marley, and etc. The failure rate among the china made lamps is very high(probably close to 90%). Issues range from cloudy liquid, bad flow or now flow at all, poor quality glass, or damaged bases.

As of November 2010 Lava Lite claims to have fixed the quality control issues, but some people claim to have bought lamps of poor quality.

What is my lamp made out of?

What we know

The lava lamp was found to contain water, 38% by mass; chlorinated paraffin, 36%; low molecular weight polyethylene glycol, 13%; kerosene 7%; and microcrystalline wax, 6%.

Lava lamps flow optimally at 45-50 C.

The wax contains paraffin wax, a mineral oil such as ondina 17, carbon tetrachloride, and petroleum jelly.

The liquid contains glycerol ethylene, glycol, polyethylene glycol or propylene glycol(30% of total volume).

Lamps with screw on caps were manufactured with a sticker inside the cap that had the date printed on them. You may also find the date of the lamp printed on the bottom of the base. Screw top caps were used from 1965 until 1995 on 52oz models and until 1993 on 32oz models, after that they switched to bottle cap type tops. Not every lamp will have the tag as they tend to fall out if the cap has been unscrewed.

USA Bottle Cap

USA lamps with bottle caps have the date they were manufactured printed on the cap.

This is a bottle cap from a 32 ounce 2002 model, the big 29 is the globe wax and water combo (see color chart below) The first line of small numbers is the 2 digit year followed by the 24 hour time code, 02 is 2002 and the lamp was made at 08:06. The second line of small numbers is the full date of manufacture 08-13-02. Sometimes these numbers will be swapped slightly.

This cap from a 32 ounce 1994 model shows a slightly different stamping just for example of what you might run across. This lamp was made on 05-16-94 at 05:01

52 ounce caps usually had a different way the caps were coded, they added extra digits or letters to the codes due to different production lines and product codes. The cap below shows the big letters 121D , the 1 is for 52oz globe, the 21 is the globe color code and the D is the production line letter. The lamp was made 04-29-02 at 04:22

Some US made globes from time to time will be seen with a gold colored cap. The common misconception is they are China made but the truth is they simply ran out of caps with the LavaLite logo occasionally. They were also used for the final runs of US made globes the last few weeks. This cap shows a 52oz model with black wax clear water globe made 10-05-01 at 10:04

China

The new China lamps use bottle caps with a sticker on top that has the date they were manufactured. The format used for the China lamps changes from time to time. If you have a variation post it.

On 52oz globes the numbers also have some characters with the big numbers such as "D" and sometimes an extra number in front of the color code. So you might see something like 103D. The code for this would be 03.

I purchased this 52oz red/clear lamp from a retailer, and it has never worked properly. For one thing, it came with a clear bulb that seemed to overheat it - even though I know the office where it was set up was kept at a steady 70 degrees - no direct sunlight, either. Then the lava began just sitting in the bottom of the globe, and not moving. It looked also like it was NOT adhering fully to the coil. I switched the bulb to a 40watt frosted, and it made no difference. The coil is clearly a cheap smaller-size coil typical of the China-made lamps, from what I have read here.

I contacted Lava Lite company directly, and to their credit, they shipped out a brand-new lamp the next day. It seems to work OK, except that it too, has a small coil, and would probably benefit flow-wise from having the coil stretched to fill the base of the bottle. Also - I was dismayed to find that the new lamp had a small scratch in the brushed metal finish near the very bottom of the base. I thanked Julie for her prompt service, but also sent her some photos from this site regarding the small coils and general rants about poor quality control contained here, along with these photos. I have not as yet received a response.

Can anyone give me advice on this/ reasons for why this globe doesn't work/ suggestions? Thanks in advance... How to Best Use a Dimmer?tag:oozinggoo.ning.com,2008-02-08:1566398:Topic:244002008-02-08T22:23:30.334ZEric Bhttps://oozinggoo.ning.com/profile/EricB

My lamp takes a long time to heat up, then overheats very soon afterward. I bought a dimmer and am trying to find the best way to use it. Right now, I'm leaving it a full power until it heats up, then lowering the voltage. I'm not getting much movement. Should I keep the power level the same from start to finish? Should I wait unitl it is almost overheated until I lower the power? What is working best for…

I think 40W is too high for 32oz, but perfect for 52oz.tag:oozinggoo.ning.com,2007-12-16:1566398:Topic:44232007-12-16T05:32:12.846ZRosebudteghttps://oozinggoo.ning.com/profile/Lon
I've been watching my lamps these last few days. I haven't turned them on much recently because I overheated a 32oz not long ago and now I'm almost afraid to turn them on.

But I started turning a few of them on recently and I've noticed something.

40 watt bulbs are too hot for 32oz lamps. For a 52oz the 40W seems to be perfect. For the 32oz. The 40W is just too hot. MAYBE a 40W Frosted works, but I'm worried that it is too hot as well.
But I started turning a few of them on recently and I've noticed something.

I'll be buying a 30W Frosted bulbs and trying that out on one of my notorious overheaters. Anyone have experience with 30W as compared to 40W?

I wish I could find a 35W A15 bulb. I'm just at a loss of what to do. The instructions say it works best at 70-74 but when the temp in the house got to 68 I had an overheat. Just last night I saw one that looked a little warm. Went to touch it and near burned my finger!

So in any case, the arguement I wish to present is... Are 40W bulbs too hot for 32oz in your opinion?
