Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

A completely new lamp is being launched on the 2nd Nov.

Can't link the picture sorry. Won't let me.

But looks die cast, and possibly looking at the curvature it might be taking an astro bottle.

And first 100 out the window. Now a lottery of all the orders placed on the same day. Seems irrelevant to still call it first 100 when it isn't.

What are your thoughts on what it might be?

I thought the email was a bit silly tbh, if you are going to do the raffle system then just send them out and you either get one or you don’t.  Adding an extra step that could be prone to error is just asking for trouble.

My second order arrived so I’m going to try a couple of different bottles tonight (yellow/red, and blue/yellow).  Will update on whether those bottles perform better than the clear/black

Ok, well the blue liquid/yellow wax is already melted and moving nicely… so it may well be a colour specific issue.

That one may end up overheating to be honest, but it is working really well at the moment, I’m quite surprised at how well!

In regards to tealights, I tried some Prices tealughts (Amazon) yesterday hoping they’d fix my clear/plum, but they actually seemed to run cooler than the Mathmos candles.  If you are having overheating issues it may be worth giving those a shot.

I've found that prices are quite good. They start sluggish and then go nuts later on. I've been using chefs larder tealights. Bags of 100. They're great for fireflows and pods but don't quite cut it for the evo.

Home bargains tealights are quite good also. Wilco were rubbish, tiny silly flame where a slight gust will extinguish them. Bolsius are good, although again a little too hot. IKEA are good but I find them hard to get not living near one.

The IKEA ones can be bought on Amazon for 2-3 times the price.  I have bought them direct from IKEA in the past but only when I’m ordering other stuff online (furniture).  I have none left sadly so can’t test them, but my daughter needs a new desk so I’ll probably order some soon then report back.

as an addendum, the yellow liquid/red wax is now also flowing really well so the clear/plum must be a definite issue.

I had tried sticking a coin under the candle yesterday to try to improve heating for the plum, but it just resulted in a massive build up of soot (due to bad airflow I assume).  Don’t worry, I have a gas fire so I have an airbrick and CO monitor ;)

As an addendum to the ikea thing, it seems they have two types of tea lights now, the original ones (glimma?) and a cheaper one.  Reviews seem to say that the cheaper ones only burn for about 2 hrs.  If you are willing to burn through twice the amount they may run cooler too.

We may need a whole new thread on the optimal tealight for each colourway…

clear/black is looking like a blowtorch may be optimal!

good to know about chef’s larder, I find my fireflows/pods always overheat.

Some bottles are just badly made.

My pitted orange non first 100 telstars bottle would not even move. That was a blue Yellow. Sent the whole thing back. 3 faults in one. I even tried it with my 35 watt bulb telstar and it wouldn't budge an inch.

However my evo Is perfect in every way.

I'm very concerned about the cracking bottle thing though. We may be facing another product recall here. So I've packed it away for now until I'm more confident about using it.

I thought these lamps were supposed to work with any tealight candle, preference to the four hours ones as stated on their details. Tealights vary so much even from batch to batch, it seems like a heck of a lot of faffing around to need to work out which candles are best.

That's my worry, a bottle breaking could be a disaster for furnishings and floorings and a slimy mess to have to clean up.

Has anyone had an email from Mathmos today? Perhaps they should have shared this info at time of purchase NOT 3 days after delivery!!

They should have been testing the lamp and various bottles for a long enough period of time prior to putting the lamps into production.

Yeah I got an email stating...

"Thank you so much for buying our new Evo lava lamp. We are bringing to your attention a few important points before you use your Evo.

Please trim the wick of the tea light to 0.5cm and point it upwards before lighting.

Long wicks can occasionally cause flaring of the flame that could affect the bottle.

Please wait 24 hours or more before using Evo.

The bottle needs to warm to room temperature before use. A sudden temperature change could damage the bottle.

Do not use Evo with Neo bottles or old Telstar or Baby bottles.

Neo bottles have a plastic coating that will melt.

Older Telstar and Baby bottles may sit too near the candle, only use bottles bought from Mathmos in the last two years.

Please watch our video and refer to the instructions here.

Kind Regards,

Mathmos Team"

They are obviously experiencing some problems.

Just saying cracked bottle is worrying me. And having to wait 24 hrs to use. I think this is very excessive. 2 hrs max should be enough.

And what about our existing Lava Lamp bottles? I keep mine in a cellar and they're always colder, but just swap them out and use. Never had a problem.

When I first looked at my evo, I noticed that the bottom of the bottle is very close to the flame. Not good. I'm looking at raising the bottle quite a bit before using this again. I'm sorry I just don't trust it at the moment. So I'm gonna chill and see what happens in the next few weeks. So am sticking with my Neo for the moment.

Looking forward to see what's released in the run up to Xmas and am hoping for a shiny black Neo lamp. Or a white astro. I don't think we are going to get anything else new new this year.
