Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

This is my first post in quite a while, kind of feel like I am coming back home LOL Became a homeowner over a year ago, and just starting to feel settled. Now have time to enjoy Lava more again and contribute / interact more.

So I got this "Fantasy Light" I found nearby. When I saw it, I remembered they used to be sold in some department stores in the very early 2000's I think. I got it for $5! It came without a cap, so threw this on it for now.

First impression was the globe is fat and heavy like larger than a 32oz but not big as 52oz. But shaped like a Mathmos AstroBaby. The wax is very thick when melted, the blobs when they separate, form small frozen pointed shards that re-freeze after breaking apart. After a while kind of hangs at the top like overheated, then after a few hours forms the hoovering ball. Need to try a dimmer next, calls for a 40 watt and that is what is in it now.

Anyone have any variations they want to share or know about them, rarity etc. I don't remember too many in over 20 years collecting.

Bottom reads:

Hi Galaxy_9.

It's super great to see this latest post from you after such a long break. Great to see a contribution from an early Oozing Goo member.
I've a feeling this was made by Nova, could be wrong. It's a higher quality lamp from China or nearby. I like these ones and I think your cap works well. The original cap is more pointed like perhaps a Starship or Mathmos Telstar.
Love your decor by the way. That looks a great chill zone!

Thanks Modulo, it's good to come back. I couldn't remember if cap was pointed or not. That base gets crazy hot too. Like it could scald you! The whole shape reminds me of a 60's knockoff. I got to find the right cap. Maybe use a polished one from the newer 32 oz ones.

PS - where the lamp is shown on the C shaped table, I usually have a grande there, it works better for scale. But couldn't wait to show off a little of my style now that I have a house LOL.

I do like that style!

Love the deco

I visualize a white egg chair hidden from photo to the left along with a spaceball 8-track radio

The lamp is certainly unique and one I would not hesitate to add to my collection

I love the patterns it shines on the table and walls\

As far as a cap goes, there is a particular chrome color of the Lava Brand metallic series in 14"

it is inexpensive and already comes in chrome.

alternate option is to take a aluminum cap to a local chrome shop.

I just did this with several lamps.

it is not cheap option to have done correctly.

I fear the costs would be more than option 1 or maybe locating a mathmos donar lamp

Here's what the Nova cap looks like:

The Nova lamps look like it has the rolled metal lip around top of base. Mine is flat edge flush against the glass because the glass bottle insets to meet flush with the top rim of base. Wonder if a sleeve was present at one point kind of like the Lipian industries rocket lamps have.

@Claude J, thanks, I couldn't remember which size had the polished metal caps, that helps. Going to try a few retailers for the polished finish. Saw them last year at Target I think, but they stopped after a very short time.

Your Welciome

after i saw a past post, i see now that the 14" cap would not be accurate design, but it would at least match in finish

If you find a starship cone cap (I'll check my inventory too),I can add it to my next chrome shop order for you.

But thats shape is not entirely accurate either

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of the lamp
