Help H6821 - Lava Grande Bulb replacement - 100R20F too hot... :(

This has been a 2 year (yes 2 year!) quest. 

 

My son got a really cool 250 oz lava lamp - worked great! 

 

My son went to school & I was cleaning his room (the lamp was off & cool)... I picked up the lamp to clean it & dropped the metal base/bulb housing and the bulb broke. (The globe did not fall or get bumped, just the base.)

 

After much searching I found a new bulb and replaced the old one, but now the lava does not flow right... From the diagrams on the Lava Lite site it looks as though the globe is getting too hot... lots of small lava blobs - instead of the big flowing ones.

 

I have gone through 6 different 100r20f bulbs, just in case I was missing something (and since the only bulbs I could find came in a case of 6).

 

Can anyone tell me if by chance the globe went bad at the same time the bulb broke?  What do the smaller blobs really mean?  Tired of wasting my time on this venture.

Simple solution to try - get a table lamp dimmer.  Something like this:  http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100478442/h_d2/ProductDispl...

Just bought the dimmer... found out that the original 100w flood that was in the lamp was an incandescent flood, the "new" (and yet still hard to find) 100w floods are halogen & That's why they heat the globe up way too high.

 

Can't thank you enough for the tip... the lamp was literally in the donate pile!  Will let you know how it works in about 6 hours :)
