Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hi,

I just refilled a Lunar, a Jet and an Astro with a Grande Glitter.

I tried to dye the jet bottle with the usual food coloring, and it just ruined the lamp :-(
Really cloudy.

I also tried to use the gookit dye in a little quantity of liquid just to see, and it didn't mix at all.

Then I was stupid enough to taste a drop of the liquid.
This not Propylen Glycol like the Mathmos glitter, it tastes acid, anybody knows what it is?
Toxic?

Thanks.

Anyone?

You tasted a drop of the liquid?!?!

If it's Lava Lite China-made glitter, you can dye it with food dye. I dyed a clear one green a year or so ago.

Mine is a Lava Lite china made glitter too, but food coloring didn't mix.

Yes I'm a little crazy about the tasting :-) (and I still don't know what it is)

What brand of food coloring did you use? I used the McCormick's brand (NON-gel). What do you have there in France?

It's a liquid one, it contains:

E122, E202 and citric acid.

The liquid in the glitter Grande is faster than the mathmos one, and tastes acid.

It's not a solvent as it doesn't smell strong. I noticed some small foam (like soap) at the top when I received the bottle, so it must contains some of surfactant agent.

I forgot to say there is also a lot of salt in the bottom of the globe.

I think it may be some citric acid badly mixed with the liquid...

I think I've seen something like that before. I think the China glitter stuff is a lot less toxic than the US-made glitter stuff we used to have. That stuff will melt your skin off.

I've dyed glitters using soap dye from hobby lobby, Dont know what you have over there but look for soap making supplies.
