Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

i got my first glitter wizard today!! a few questions

so i totally scored my first glitter wizard on ebay for $15.50!! i'm so excited, i've been wanting one for a while but i could always only find them on the kinda expensive side so i was glad to have snagged it for so cheap! its in really good condition too. it says 33W on the cap.

so i had a few questions. the lamp is purple and i'm wondering about the color light that it puts out? is it more of a pinky purple color or true purple? i know its always hard to know the true color when you just see a picture. and also in the pic the seller had, i couldnt tell for sure or not, but it seemed like the globe was missing a little bit of fluid, that or they were holding it on a tilt because in another pic it seemed full. but either way i'm wondering why it is that a lot of the wizards seem to be missing fluid sometimes? are they leaking or whats the deal with that?

also ive seen on a thread before someone mentioning putting pieces of plastic in the base so the pinholes shine colors instead of the bulb light, how does one go about this? any modding techniques for wizards ya'll can give me? are there any problems i should look out for with the wizard? ive seen some people mentioning glitter/flow problems.

any info is greatly appreciated!! glad to finally say i own an original lava lite!!

Super nice score!!!  I too just recently scored my first glitter wizzie!!!  It was just b4 the heat hit.  My first was a red and I couldn't resist because it was NIB on ebay for 37.00 plus shipping.  BUT NIB......then I purchased a purple from a fellow OG'er!!

My purple does give off a true purple.  Most do.  Here's the deal though.  If the person that is selling has exposed it to a lot of sunlight, and it is faded it might not be a true dark purple but a lighter violet.  I've seen some faded reds that were being sold as pink/red, but most of the purple wizzies I've seen on ebay were pretty dark, so I think the issue with the fading is more with the reds IMO.  I have a room that just gets blasted with sunlight, so I cover all my lamps with pillow cases.  Looks funky but colors stay true so who cares.

The liquid will be a few inches lower but when it really gets hot and swirling, the level will rise.  Some are lower then others and you will still see a tad of a gap between the wiz hat and the globe.  I think because of their age some might have lost some liquid due to evaporation.  I don't think it is a leakage problem as there is a red or black stopper in them due to the liquid being more toxic then the original goo lavas.  Some even have said they can pick up a slight wiff of chemical through the stopper but I haven't with mine.  Even my new one.

So far the only mod that I have seen with the glitter wizzies is the color changing film that is placed in the base. If you can't find the thread I will try to search for it and post the link for you.  I think that is a great idea as some time the light shines so brightly through the cut outs it hits me in my eyes when I am trying to sleep!!

If you have never seen a glitter wizard up close and personal it is true eye candy!!!  Enjoy!!!  I remember when I saw my first one...I was truly in awe!!

If you want to use a color film, I would suggest something like the following;

http://www.stagespot.com/gel.html?gclid=CMSU34-G_sYCFVIbgQodq2sJ-Q

Those are color gel sheets for stage lighting, they are made to withstand high-heat stage lights so should pose no problems in a lamp base.

Yep, you've got their purple globe, which does get a bit pink.

Yes, stage gels could be put in there, but the tape you'd need to use to attach them would probably melt.

Jonas I scored my purple wizzie from Analoghaze from this group and mine is pure purple!!!  No pink whatsoever!!  You can see pics and vids on my pics and vids page.  I think they go pink when they are exposed to too much direct sunlight and fade a tad over the years.  I guess John kept his away from sunlight since he acquired it because it is the deepest shade of purple!!!  I luv it!!  Thanks again John for the score!!!

when the light is on, its like a strange plum purple pink. idk how to even describe the color. a camera refuses to show what it truly looks like, so I was kinda unpleasantly surprised when I received mine. I also hate that it doesn't put off much light in the room, except for the yellow light coming from the holes, which I absolutely hate. and I can't figure out anyway to cover the holes successfully. I'm glad I got it for cheap, I should have just bid on the red one.

also, the cap is in perfect condition no rust or anything or leaks but when that sucker is hot and you smell underneath the cap, it is a VERY LOUD chemical smell. it honestly scares me and now I don't run it for very long at a time.

I heard that a lot about the glitter wizzies also.  Vox said that he can pick up a faint chem smell from his also.  I don't smell anything from mine.  My red came brand new in box and was never lit and that doesn't smell either.  Weird how some do and some don't.  I have a pretty sensitive nose too, so I would smell it if it were there.  That's a shame you aren't happy with your purchase, but at least you didn't spend big buck.  Some of those wizzie's are going towards 80 and up!!!  I would never pay that for one.  Haze sold me my purple, but I forget what it cost.  I think 25 or 30 maybe.  The only reason I paid 37.00 for my red is it was new in box.  If you want a good glitter wiz you have to try and luck out and get them NIB.

P.S.  My purple wiz has the old vintage black base.  Maybe that is the difference.  I think the black base wizzies are older.

could be! my base is silver, and it also doesn't have the blue lava lite lettering at the bottom of the base. but yes the smell is very strange. you can't smell it until you lift up the silver wizard cap and put your nose right next to the bottle cap. you can also stick your nose inside of the wizard cap and it smells in there too! very weird, smells kinda like chlorine. and its not that I'm not happy with it, I just expected it to look different. I think maybe they should not have made the liquid so dark, it makes the glitter appear pink/purple instead of silver and doesn't have many of the glitter speckles that show up on the wall. maybe if it had been a lighter purple it'd be prettier to me, idk. I knew I should have just bid on the red one the lady was selling along with the purple. it sold for the same amount as my purple too - $15.50! oh and I think I may actually paint my silver base black- I think it'd be super cute/spooky for Halloween time with a black base instead of silver!

oh and also in the pic it shows a bit of fluid missing, it doesn't look that way when heated. so its definitely not leaking, it has all of its original fluid, it even shipped on its side and has none missing. so I have no idea what that smell is about

it's just so toxic that it stinks!!!......that is why they don't use the original formulas anymore.  Even the original formula in the lava lamps supposedly was changed because of it's toxicity.  You know how they are always banning stuff.

I luv the black base on the purple!!!  You may find you like it better that way!!!  Gotta tell ya...my red is much more sparkly and seems to have more glitter then my purple.  I thought it was just because the red was new.  Now i'm like hummm....

just smelled the inside of my wizzie caps!!!  I can smell it!!!  lololol!!  chemical

yes I could tell that on your YouTube videos! I think it just has to do with the darkness of the liquid, and how much light is allowed to get through to bounce off the glitter. the red liquid is far lighter than the purple so more sparkly shinies get projected onto the wall (:
