Little Kids + Unknown BIG Dogs - What's Your Reaction?

Here's the scoop.  I am sitting at my desk and I hear our dogs starting to go wild.  Outside the window I see two little kids.  One was like 2 or 3 the other a little older.  Both were messing with the dogs.  I go out and they are leaving.  The other kid comes back and starts poking the stick through the fence at the dogs.  All this lasts a couple minutes.

I again go out and ask the parents what the problem is and not to let the kids do that.  I said please, keep the kids away from the fence and the dogs.  The dad perks up and says there just kids.  I said, the fence is there for a reason and if the kids get bit, you're going to come after me.  Keep them away.

He I guess does not like that answer and comes over to "discuss" it.  He said what's your problem.  I told him, my problem is the fence is here for a reason and you need to keep your kids away from the dogs.  He said they were not hurting anything and they are just kids.  I said until they get bit and you come bi***ing at me.  Keep them away.

He gets all belligerent and obnoxious now.  He has a full glass of wine and is clearly intoxicated.  I asked him to leave and not let his kids do that.  He spouts off some more crap and I finally told him to f off.  Three times to be exact.   His wife said there is no need for the language and he again starts up and he nearly falls over as she is trying to pull him away.

I go back inside end of story.

Was I wrong?  My language might be harsh but I have no regrets in using it.  Some may have said to be more adult but it pisses me off.  What parent in their right mind would allow a child, let alone two young ones, to go up to a fence, nearly 6 feet tall with 3, very large dogs barking loudly?  Who would do that?  Then to start complaining they are only kids??  WTF?

My dogs are not mean by any stretch, however they have never been around kids like that and I do not know how they would react.  Let alone to a kid poking a stick through the fence.

Where is the common sense?

the guy is an idiot
Let survival of the fittest teach the children.. The parents aren't that concerned, so when one child get's eaten or loses an arm, the other will learn not to poke at dogs with sticks. And the parents will learn to be more careful. You teach two generations a lesson at once, and you feed your dogs for free.
Lol
Also, when drunk people get in my face (It IS, St patties day, expect retardation) I just throw things at them.
He will still be saying they're just kids 13 years from now when the cops show up.
No, you were NOT in the wrong. I must agree with simalar opinions, He's a freaking idiot! I had a similar experience, neighbor kids (around the ages of 5-9) throwing rocks at my rottweiler puppy through our fence. The big baby NEVER growled till then & seeing Riggs pacing along the fence, made my Hubby warn the kids. They ran off, but in a week or so, it happened again. So, Hubby went to talk to the parents. Hubby explained to the dad that once he's taught that kids are "bad", no fence is gonna hold him back. Our youngest was 6 at the time & we didn't want to find out a child had been mauled, especially since Riggs was our son's puppy! In our situation, the dad agreed & talked to his kids. It didn't happen again, as far as we ever knew. Riggs grew up to protect our boy & would put up with alot of ear pulling, tail tugs without incident.
Call the cops, report the kids as terrorizing or abusing your dog. Don't bother with the parents, unless you have no alternative.
i absolutely agree with Vixen and the others. you were right but if those stupid kids taunt and tease, liability unfortunately would fall to you.
i'd get in touch with an animal league or whatnot to document things. don't know if it'll help but.....
drunk people are annoying...in my opinion
You all are hysterical. Thanks for the support. I just wanted to make sure I didn't fly off the handle.

What's weird is the guy made a comment about how the fence was there to hid our trash. I was like wtf? I guess he didn't realize it was a chain link fence that you can SEE THROUGH so it's not hiding anything. He also stated he had a "job". Not sure wtf that meant either. Last but not least, he said our dogs are always barking. Which pissed me off because I make sure that doesn't happen. ESPECIALLY at night.

If I hear our dogs barking, I give it a minute or two to calm down and see if it was just a critter or something. Anything more than that I see what the deal is. If they keep it up, I tell them to shut up or come in. I can't stand excessive barking. Night time, barking gets a warning. If it happens again, they come in. I don't play that.

So I am not sure what the hell his issue is.
That geezer sounded like a drunkard idiot not fit to have children. There's too many drunken idiots about nowadays purporting to be 'decent parents'.
LOL.... too true.

wow-this is an old thread but I say 4 sure that's a dangerous game they're allowed to play cuz dogs do remember and can present themselvs to be a problem to the young men some day w/out fences, esp if the taunting continues or gets worse....yikes

You are dealing with the perfect example why brothers and sisters shouldn't sleep in the same room as teenagers. If it continues to happen, you may want to make a report with the police just to cover your backside.
