Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Well, hello there, all you fine gooers. I'm new to this site, but I've lurked on and off since last year when the Colossus lamps came out for sale again.

A bit about me - I'm from Vancouver, Canada and I do not actually own a lava lamp, yet. Well, kind of true, but kind of not. I have a lava lamp that I've had for about 15 years, but it is not an official Lava Lamp. I love it and use it regularly. I've always wanted more, but I have a history with obsessive collecting and hoarding, so I must take care not to get crazy ;)

Anyway, I'm planning my first offical lamp. I'm interested in the following models in particular - Century, CoachLite, Aladdin, Grande and Lunar.

I'm full of questions and would appreciate any tips from experienced collectors.

My main concern with purchasing lamps, is shipping. Due to the breakable nature and weight of these things, I'm figuring that shipping is often as much or more than the lamps. Recommendations for the safest place to buy? Ebay, on here from collectors etc. Any info is appreciated. Many thanks,

Hopper

The newer lamps from Lava Lite are truly hit and miss. Like Keith said, the Neons from Spencer's are good, but two out of four of mine have wax stuck around the very bottom. Also depends on how picky you are. Some don't mind all the light flaws in the glass. Some get ones with gunk in the coil, some don't. My only advice is to RETURN all lamps that aren't up to your standards - it sends a message to Lava Lite that their quality needs to improve. Do not keep an "it's OK" lamp.

I must say that I haven't had the misfortune that others have with china lamps, except for the flow quality.  The recent neon series available at Spencer Gifts have been good lamps for me although others have had some issues.

I think y'all might have jinxed me. I'm not happy with the flow of one of the new lamps. It seems to get stuck. Very annoying.

In other news, I've found a collector who is selling a bunch of US made glitter lamps. I really like them. He is asking $35 each. He also has a ton of US Aristocrats that look to be in excellent shape for the same price.

I've been trying to locate the history of the glitter lamps, but not found much about them. Does $35 each sound like a reasonable price? They sure are pretty

$35 each may be a steal or maybe not depends on the age and brand etc. If they are vintage lamps from the 60s through 80s then it is a steal in my opinion.

Even if they are not in perfect condition or achulie lava lite lamps 35 bucks for a decent glitter is a good price

There is some history behind glitter lamps but not as much as lava - glitter has always bee a bit on the side compared to lava, check out the lava library http://http://oozinggoo.ning.com/page/lava-library in particular fantasia lamps - they did a lot with fiber optics and glitters etc.

For those US Glitter globes, refer back to that globe color code page in the lava library I linked you to early in the thread.  You will want to look for the tell tale "Lava Lite" written in script with numerics to identify the color, date, etc.  The majority of glitters are typically sold mounted on a Wizard base.  They can create quite a beautiful display and have the tendency to cast sparkles on your walls, ceiling, cat, etc.  Nice thing about glitters too?  Gives you something to enjoy while the lava is heating up.  Below is a selection of some of my glitters.  I won't be able to replicate this shot next Valentine's Day as I just received an additional pair of glitters from a CL seller.
