Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

So, I used the food safe water based airbrush gun food coloring to color my blue kit fluid and I have to say the blue is magnificent!!!  Downside is it's 4.99 for a small bottle and it literally takes 1 drop.  It's so highly concentrated, but the color saturates almost immediately!!!  I had to use about 8 drops of the McCormick yellow to color my 20 oz lamp.  See the difference??  Anyway, they have a Pearl Shimmer food coloring similar to this one on Amazon.  I was wondering what that would look like in a goo kit lamp's fluid.....it says it's light reflective.......I think I'm going to bite the bullet and purchase it and drop it in some water first to see how it looks. Worse case scenario........I can use it to bake with, lol!!!!   An idea more of a question really, but wanted some feedback.  Hope this isn't in the wrong place.

OOOOooo, was thinking maybe a white wax and add the shimmer to the fluid......first I want to see if the shimmer food dye is translucent and just makes the liquid shimmer.

That would be interesting to see! It could turn out like those old desk lamps that had a spiral impeller up the middle that would slowly churn a pearlescent color fluid up the column. Trying to find the damn thing but Google and my terminology are failing me. Too heavy on that stuff might make the fluid milky though as the shimmer doesn't fully dissolve but rather stays as a very fine powder almost like glitter. Maybe it fully dissolves in a liquid though.

Definitely post some shots/video if you pursue it.

Definitely on my bucket list Vox!!!  lol!!!  I'm going to try it in an empty globe filled with distilled and put on a lighted base first to see what kind of effect I get.  Then if it looks decent, I'll decide what color lava would best compliment the "shimmer".  It is a powdery substance though.  I thought about the whole make the liquid milky theory too.  It could go either way.  Oh well, 4.99 to try it.  And again, I could always make shimmery, pearl colored icing for my next cake!!  lol!!

Ooh cool!!  We definitely want to see the results!  I'm wondering how it will react with the wax, it would be cool if it incorporated into the wax and made it "glittery".

Keith, it's water based, so like the blue I used to do the white goo/blue fluid, I'm sure it will leave the goo alone.  HOWEVER, lol, if the liquid is shimmering and one is looking through to the lava, would the lava have the effect of shimmer......this remains to be seen.  Like I said, I'm going to try it in an empty globe filled with distilled and placed on a lighted base.  Then I will add the dye and see what reaction I get before I do anything stupid and mess up an entire lamp.  Although I guess I could just pour it out and start over.  I'm even wondering if you could 2 tone the liquid.  Like for instance, have a pink liquid or purple, add a drop of the shimmer.  Would one get a pink shimmer???  Again, definitely on my bucket list.  After school shopping is done, I'm going to invest my money in some empty globes.  There are 2 52 oz'ers complete for 15.00 plus 17 to ship that I have my eyes on.  I'm going to grab them, then I'll work on ordering the goo.  Seller says there are some occlusions in the glass but not bad.  Globes seem to be in decent shape.  Also, off topic for a minute, I'm heading out to a job interview right now, so once back to work, my time will be a little bit more sparse, but I'll always have time for LAVA!!!!!

Time AND money!!  lol

If you saved any old goo from your transplants you could experiment with that. ;)

Nope.  Couldn't save any goo.  It was pretty much all fried.  I guess experimenting with fried goo could have worked, but it started to get all chunky so I threw it out in a plastic cup once it hardened.

Have you tried to dilute the dye slightly so you can use it in different strengths so it could be used to give lighter colors

Duh, no Tim, I hadn't thought of that!!  That is a great idea though.  This dye is really concentrated.  I don't know if it has to do with because it is used in an airbrush gun, hence it has to be concentrated, but for some reason I like the color it gives.  I like the saturation.  Now I used yellow McCormick in my 20 oz and I had to add like 6 drops or more to get it saturated where it didn't look pale and weak if you know what  I mean.  It's hard to explain it.  It's like using a weak magic marker where you get that pale color.  Maybe it's me, but I think the airbrush dye looks better in liquid.
