It's possible, tho they only made these for 2 years if i remember right that's why they are so rare,  perhaps you just happen to gotten a slightly defective one, maybe you should post a video and audio of it running on youtube, I'd be interested to hear what it sounds like.

Hmmm. Mine has been pretty loud since the day I bought it. They were very new then. Maybe they made it better in later models?

Really? Strange, the ones I had were very quiet, I only hear a slight tinkling from them like ice cracking in the winter, perhaps the electronics on your's had a issue? I know if a part starts going bad in these, they can make all sorts of hair pulling noises

Nice! I bought mine at Spencer's AGES ago. The sound of the lightning hitting the glass is pretty hard to overcome for me. The only time I turn it on is if I have some loud rock on that will drown it out...lol!
