Well said Kira.  We are not all going to agree on aesthetics so design is (within reason) secondary.  The most stylish design won't make up for a nonlowing cheap quality lamp.

Characteristics of a good comment:

  • Insight/additional information
  • Intelligent critique
  • Wit/humor
  • Calm, courteous, reasoned disagreement, either with the opinions/facts presented in a post itself or with other commenter s
  • Sharing of relevant, personal anecdote (within reason)
  • we are not all gonna agree but one thing.. are we not all wanting the same result.. True quality lamps with both inside performance and outer appearance to be restored.. I don't want a clear lamp that flows great sitting in a cheap metal alloy base with a dull generic looking finish..Real metal.. steel, brass, copper..
  •  I have been collecting these lamps almost my entire life and I feel I should be able to purchase a new lamp that is equally great to ones I got in the 70s -90s
  • LL knows what we want.. half stepping for me at least is unacceptable.. I for one at this point and let me stress the I... could care about new designs or color combos.. focus.. lets start with the basics.. Original formula and base metals...

Well I have to say this lamp is awsome just for its shear size, I thought it couldent be done with a collouss globe but clearly it can.

Thanck you Autum for sharing this picture.

After a decade o crap its pretty hard to be all smiles ... and its quite obvious the metal is a crap alloy like all the lamps LL makes now.. look at the finish.. My lamps sit around my house and I want them to look just as good when cold as when running..

And like i had said.. I dig the design concept.. only that I would love to see LL original quality in both formula and base metal return to its former greatness..

I agree Keith - catalog inclusions are what frustrate me the most.  I don't know if its proper to label the lamp pictured as a prototype, as when I think of prototype I think an early design leading to full blown production.  My issue is one of managing expectations.  Don't list a lamp in your catalog unless you actually plan to deliver on it!  I know I was not alone in having a full on boner over that Grande Starship.  I let Lava Lite know my feelings on this subject back in August 2010 via Facebook.  Some snippets follow.  2010 also promised 4 Halloween resins, yet we only saw two.  WHY?!?

Me:

Greetings Lava Lite. I see that your 2010 catalog includes the Grande Starship, an amazing looking rocket supporting a grande globe and measuring a staggering 41 inches high. Seeing as the calendar is about to turn to 2011, when can we expect to be able to purchase this lamp? This is quite possible the most exciting lamp you have offered in at least the last five years!!!

I would also like to acquire all four of the Halloween resins, so a release date on those would be appreciated too.

Tim:

We are currently undergoing some testing issues that have delayed the release of the Grande Starship lava lamp to market. We do not have an estimated market release date for this product, but it will not be in 2010. This was not an anticipated problem. We apologize for this, and share in your disappointment. Good news--our Halloween resins will be available next month. Please check out our website for further updates.
Feel free to email us with any other questions/comments: socialmedia@lavalite.com.

Tim again (I wasn't the one with the harsh tone BTW):

We appreciate that you care enough about Lava Lamps to be upset about the ship date. We're upset too. Please understand though that sometimes there are factors outside of our control. We're working to have the lamps available as soon as we can.

You're welcome to voice your feelings here on our page, but keep your tone respectful. Pretend you're in our living room. If you have other issues with our products, we're all ears, but we'll only accept public comments on our page if you play nice.

How can we help?

-Tim

Me:

I agree - those comments were a little out of line.

However - I can understand the frustration and would recommend you work to improve how you manage customer's expectations.

Namely - I do believe you listed metallic lava in your 2009 catalog, but they were shelved. The same thing in 2010; it appears only two of your four advertised Halloween resins were produced. In addition, the Starship will not be available.

Personally - I would prefer you develop a working prototype before you list these lamps as upcoming attractions.

Will anyone here ever own one?  Not likely

Will anyone here ever date a movie star or supermodel? Not likely, but you keep looking ;)

Will I ever own an Imperial, Colossus, or Lunar?  It seems unlikely right now but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the lamp.

Does this lamp have design problems?  Yes, but consider that this is probably a preproduction model that didn't go any further.  Changes in design are fairly common, so changing the cone to something tapered at the top would be a simple change.  The base could be made wider for better stability, but then floor space and intrusion into the rest of the room becomes a problem.  The base could also be made shorter for better stability, but that alters the sleekness of the design.  So companies design new products that never make it past preproduction.  That doesn't mean they are teasing us or not coming through with a promise. (I know they have had designs in catalogs that never made it to consumers so yes they need to be more careful in that area)

So it comes down to this, I would love to own this lamp!  But I would also like to see a better, more finished design.

I know you're going to kick me for this, but I don't like it either. LOL Top should be pointy. ;) That being said, if this were for sale and clear, I'd buy one. It's amazing to see it, but yeah, like Jim said, it's hard to see something you know you can never have.

Very nice. Bet it's pretty warm/hot standing next to it.
