I have a couple crappy modern spencers lamps that aren't worth turning on anymore, and I want to use them for experimentation.  Problem is, I have no idea how I would reseal it without a bottle…Continue

Trying to crack the original formula- why was kerosene used?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Tevfik Dogruman Nov 15. 153 Replies

In my quest to figure out exactly what the original formula is, one thing I haven't figured out is why they used Kerosene in the mixture.  It seems like it was a very small part of the mixture,…Continue

This was the very first lamp I had as a kid- and being a really dumb kid I decided one day to open it and "add more lava to it" by putting... candle wax... in it.  This is the only pic I can find…Continue

"Hi Dmytro, I've never used ceresin. It looks like white beeswax. The melting point is appropriate. You can try."

"Hi, Tevfik Dogruman. Thanks for your answer. I will try to melt the chlorinated paraffin and microcrystalline wax first, and then add the kerosene/synthetic thinne. Do you know if it is ok to use ceresin instead of microcrystalline wax?"

Tevfik Dogruman replied to Ant Bee's discussion Trying to crack the original formula- why was kerosene used?
"Hi Dmytro Lapchuk First, I melt the solid ones and mix them. Then I add the liquid ones. The thing to note here: The boiling point of liquid substances must be higher than the temperature of the melted wax.I think the wattage of the bulb is too…"

"How many liters of lamp are you making? How many watt bulbs did you use? Wax density is adjusted by mixing chlorinated paraffin and microcrystalline paraffin at a certain rate. Kerosene or synthetic thinner provides fluidity. The density of their…"

Dmytro Lapchuk replied to Ant Bee's discussion Trying to crack the original formula- why was kerosene used?
"I tried to do according to this formula. The consistency turned out to be similar. But I have a problem: when heated, bubbles of air (or other gas) rise from the formed paraffin, as a result, my bulb explodes. Situation was the same with kerosene or…"

"@Jsmooth, this is a very, very early formula and wasn't nearly as opaque as what it looks like in the picture. In my newer formulations, I use a tiny dab of white oil based paint, the kind artists get in tubes.  Works wonders"

Mr T replied to Ant Bee's discussion Trying to crack the original formula- why was kerosene used?
"Did you put any SLS in the water.  This will make the lava flow more snake like.  Just use a few drops in the water and see how the wax flows.  Don't add too much otherwise the wax will become too runny.  "
