(Mis)Adventures in Glitter

So I've been steadfastly working on making a GOOD custom, DIY glitter lamp. Hearing people who know what they're talking about on this board say things like "Nobody has ever made an acceptable home-made glitter lamp" was disheartening. :( I thought it was going to be simpler than making a lava lamp, but it's just as complicated. I actually DID get a working lamp made, but it used tiny glitter, and what I'm wanting to use is much bigger.

After seeing that Chinese cylinder lamp that I…

MAD MOD BLOG 001 - WTH am I doing?

I threatened to do it...and here it is. :p

Anyway, this will be a repository of things related to my ongoing modding efforts, and maybe I'll be able to update it as I go. I guess I'll go ahead and repost this:

I ordered 100 lamps to mod, and that's what they will look like...only they will be plain, silver aluminum when they arrive, with smaller silver…

Finished

I'm beat. Did eight sucessful performances of the lava lamp artwork. Though one lady did smash a globe and cause a small flood. Glad it's over now and going to get some well earned sleep.

Light Night Info

For anyone interested in the artwork I am collaborating for, here are the details, including it's rather grandiose title:

At Broadway Studio, Nottingham, Friday Feb 10th.

Wander into the multi-coloured forest of Lava lamps – as you dream  imagination and reality collide……

Hot shocks

Been reconditioning my Hotrock lamps in preparation for my Light Night artwork. Have been filtering, topping up liquid and wax and adding surfacant. I also have been heating the lamps to try and remove wax from the sides without having to empty them all (as i don't have time) but managed to be a little careless. i dropped one, just emulsifying and cloudyness, no breakage thankfully. I also popped one in a champagne style and need to top it up again now. I just hope it will all be right on…

Light Night, Nottingham.

On the 10th of Feb I will be debuting a lava based art work with my friend Amanda. Light Night happens in a few cities other than Nottingham, but it's basically a festival of light themed art works and performances across the city centre. We are taking over the studio at the Broadway cinema, I'm building a forest of lava lamps and Amanda will be telling stories. The idea with the lamps is that many of them will be at the stage where the wax erupts into strange rock-like formations and people…

My lamp's cloudy!

Or, is it?  I don't know.  Some of the lava colour looks like if it's in the water...

Hmmm... Or is it an eye trick?

Need Advice Again... Globe spots issue

Hi All,

I recently purchased a 52 oz red/clear Lava Lite unit at Spencers. At the advice of several members here, I returned the unit as the liquid had "white flakes" floating around when heated up. I exchanged it for the 52 oz orange/purple liquid unit.

This new lamp is quite beautiful, with awesomely clear liquid and almost transparent wax! My only issue is there seems to be some kind of residual wax (or something) on the lower inside of the globe - kind of…

reply for tim gill, LUNAR H

hi tim, (carboot lunar), i think the guy did know about about the lamp, and its value, (not ebay value) he had had it for 15 years, and loved it.he was,nt that bothered if he took it home, he would,nt give me a ballpark price, and wanted me to make a bid,so i thought go low, so slowly walking away,i said £50,to my surprise,he said OK. ( now this might sound awful) but i pointed out the dents on the cone, and the deal was done for £50. i would like to point outhat the guy was not stupid  he just… Continue

I love Vintage

I love vintage stuff like fashion, books ,magazines, kitchenwares, homewares and since visiting this website I am now interested in Lava Lamps.

I did not know that collecting Lava Lamps was such a popular hobby but now I will be looking out for them at fairs ,flea markets and boot sales.

What first attracted me to this site was the Competition as I love entering competitions. If you are interested in winning collectables, you might find something of interest…
