"Newer wax formulas use chlorinated paraffin to the extent that they will float with only distilled water PERC has been out of production lamps for decades due to it's environmental and carcinogenic properties"

"I know this is an old post I'm reviving. But in case anyone else finds this and wonders... In my experimenting, I made one lamp where I didn't add as much PERC to the wax as is typically recommended in the recipes you find around…"

"Congratulations, those are some pretty nice results! Has the motion changed after braking in for awhile?  Either way I'd say you definitely should be proud of your results.  Good work!"

Profile Information

Something Interesting About Me:
Software Developer / Unix-Linux System Administrator by occupation. For a hobby I enjoy using many of the skills developed for my career along with self taught electrical engineering, amateur chemistry, wannabe metalworking, stopgap woodwork, and components acquired from trashed consumer electronics or flea markets to design and build useful devices/machines/"things"/etc. The goal of the projects being that the end results appear too high a quality to be composed of electronic junk(usually rescued from the trash) and at a total cost next to nil. For example my own hardware password manager, milliamp/volt accurate and stable bench power supply(0-45V range, pmbus, + misc), bluetooth or USB mechanical keyboard, and a Raman spectrometer(in progress). And lastly of course attempting to make my own(stable/correct behaving) lava lamp from scratch without dangerous, too hard to find, or handle chemicals.

Or put much more succinctly I enjoy learning all I can about something and then trying to put that knowledge to use to produce something of a level of quality I can be happy with.
Where I Live:
The Pacific Northwest of America(nearby where Columbia River empties to the ocean)
My First Lava Lamp was:
A Lavalite(US made) 14 inch yellow wax / purple fluid classic with silver base.
My Collection Includes this many Lava Lamps:
4
My Favorite Lava Lamp is:
My first lamp, the 14 inch yellow wax/purple fluid silver base Lavalite.
