Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hi all.

I bought a USA-made lamp on e-bay about a month and a half ago on the recommendation of the group here, and it's great. I'm extremely happy with it. As such though, I've decided that now would be a good time to tinker around with my China lamp to see if I can get it working properly.

I've ordered a gookit from gookits.com, and I'm looking forward to using it, but I digress:

I replaced the light in base with a frosted 40W, and it did not change the lamp performance any, it continues to sit at the bottom of the lamp, kind of goose-egg. So today I headed to Ace hardware and bought a coil package. I replaced the coil following the instructions on here, and I'm still having the same result: lava kind of sits at the bottom goose-egging.

The wax in the lamp seems really poor to me, but I know next to nothing about these things and I'm probably just hoping it's not the structure of the lamp itself. I'd just like to be 100% certain that when I flush out the lamp that I'm not going to have the same problems with the gookit. Are there other things I can test in an effort to get it working? It still feels like the lamp gets really warm, but so does my USA lamp, so... yeah, I don't know.

Also, if anyone can recommend any way to clean the inside of the lamp so it can be ready when my gookit arrives, it would be muchly appreciated.

The poor flow of your China lamp is caused only by the defective wax. If the light bulb in the lamp lights up then the lamp is in working order, nothing more to that. Replacing the coil was good as the China ones are junk anyways. I just use a little dish soap and water and scrub with a brush to clean out the inside of the globe. Make sure you wash out the globe very thoroughly as you don't want the soap to mix with the water you put in there for the goo kit.

Thanks for the advice and tips.

I know it's been said before, but I'll reaffirm it: I am surprised at how ridiculous and inferior lava lamps are these days, and I really wish something could be done about it.
After cleaning your vase rinse it with distilled water. Regular water can leave a film on the glass and since you will be using distilled water with the goo kit anyways, it's the surefire way to get a crystal clear lamp.
Just used the gookit. Works out great. I don't think I used enough wax though. Not that I mind. It came out to a really cool blue/purple wax combination.

The only question I have left is, a lot of the lava seems to be hanging out at the top of the lamp now before falling down. Any solutions? I read that the gookit lava is lighter, so possibly a less-wattage bulb is in order?
You can add more wax to the lamp by adding it little by little in small solid chunks (let the lamp cool down first). The solid chunks will drop to the bottom and mix in with the rest when you turn the lamp back on.

The lava at the top just means it is getting too hot. If you don't have enough wax in there adding more will make it absorb the heat better. If that doesn't solve it a less wattage bulb will work or you can pick up a small dimmer switch to attach the to the lamp.
