Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I see that our friend is also offering this item on eBay -

With respect to the previous discussion ( https://oozinggoo.ning.com/forum/topics/black-mathmos-telstar-on-eb... ), is this another 'creation'?

Love his comment on the end of his write-up....."OG MEMBERS, PLEASE DON'T BOTHER"!!!

General thoughts seem to be that the gold colour was genuine.

TBH its Flooksta's perogative if he doesnt want to sell to OG members considering past events. Oh well, plenty of other lamps about :)

i suppose what i meant was Mathmos/Crestworth did make a gold one, whether this one is genuine or not is whats up for discussion, or not as the case may be. I think if you like something, you like it, regardless.

what I wouldnt do it pay over the odds for something, but I would own a custom as long as i didnt have to pay a huge amount for it.

Ooops - missed the first thread - sorry.

As much as anything else I was just surprised to find that Mathmos had produced any anodised coloured lamps.

Originally I'd thought that they only did polished and brushed metal finishes but perhaps you learn something every so often.

And I agree with you Ford Prefect - still attractive (in black or gold) but not at a premium price.

It looks real and genuine to me. Look on the pics of the inside.

It looks like the one I have, only mine has a euro 2 prong (german?) plug. I know I bought it from someone who was well versed with mathmos and was a prior sales rep.

I'm going to quote parts of  this and put it in the other thread for historical purposes.

Could be real, but very rare if genuine, there was supposed to be only one Gold Telstar owned by Craven Walker, have since seen at least ten on ebay and this seller has sold many of them, it is a real Telstar, not sure about the colour, he will read this, so here we go, firstly, a small appology and it is a small one, the Black Telstar being sold lately that caused a major stir on here, was possibly real, it seems that Mathmos made a small number of items in Black, a member on here has a Black Phantomlite and I hate to say it, when going through the mass of lamps and boxes yesterday I discovered a Black Sputnik that I brought on ebay in November, this is what happens when you have to much you loose track...But the box was still a homemade....So make of it what you want...

there are some more common colours, namely pink & blue anodised which do pop up now and then and are obviously more expensive than the normal stainless ones.

people do make alterations to normal telstars, for example I know of someone who had a load of millenium ones made up. Thing is they looked absolutely brilliant so it wasnt like they were bad copies but not legit and original.

Just like people make knock-off clothes etc, so the same is for any desireable or collectable item.

if you're just after the look then thats fine as long as you dont pay too much.

Muchos problemos have been caused on here with people insinuating lamps are not genuine finishes/contents etc. even when the seller is not a member of OG they can (and do) view the forum. so its a tread carefully area i'm afraid!

Do you have the gold one?

The usual line up...

What does it take to anodize the base/cap in gold?

I know I got my gold/silver telstar from a credible source.

I practically bought someone's whole collection years ago. He said he was a mathmos salesman at one time.

As far as so many gold/silver telstars being available, it does make you wonder.

But it also makes me wonder as to what is known and what is done in the backroom for personal interests.

I remember speaking with a  lava world consultant who said many times they would stay late and experiment in the back room.

My stickers are much different.

In fact, mine shows imperfections in how it is made, the stickers are really stuck on. Mine looks pretty dam old too.

The one in the auction looks dam good.

Just saw that, does look a bit strange..Plus the stickers look to new, look like they come from a Jet...

I tried lifting my stickers. They are stuck on dam good. I could not lift them whatsoever.
A couple of weeks ago, I bought a black Astrobaby Glitterball from a local boot sale (for £4), it is painted though, not anodised, so there were some black lava lamps made by Mathmos

There's an excellent sticker-remover called Sticky Stuff Remover from Kleeneze that (eventually) unsticks pretty well anything. It's probably also available from many other cheaper sources!

It even softens gel ink; grease and mastics.

I'd have thought that it would shift those labels if you tried.

(WD40 also unsticks quite a lot of things, including glue.)
