Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Found oozinggoo.com when I was looking for ways to repair the Grande I picked up at CostCo a few years ago.  It's one of the Chinese made ones that has gone extremely cloudy and ceased to flow (going to try replacing the fluid one of these weekends).

It was here that I found out about really big Lava lamps.  I was bowled over by videos of the  Colossus lamps and really want to see if I could get one, I couldn't find them available anywhere so I wrote LavaLite.  I wanted to let this group know what I got this from Lava Lite today:

We have a special promo on the Colossus for serious buyers.   This will be the last time the Colossus will be seen.

Please see attached promo sheet with pricing included.

If you are interested please contact on my direct line at 630-496-6663.

Best regards,

Dude, you've got it dialed!  This is exactly how to deal with the power of the dimmer switch.  Thanks for articulating it so well.

are you sure about the bulb coming on? It may be on, but just not bright enough to see it thru the wax until you turn it up farther.

It does not matter where it is on the knob. Get it running, using approx 75% of the knob travel,,then slowly,,every 30 minutes or so,,turn it down a very small amount till you find the spot where it will quit flowing,,,that is your low spot. Use the low spot to cycle the lamp with the lowest heat needed,,,and go up just a little at a time on the knob to flow harder. When the lava gathers too much at the top and STAYS there,,,that is your highest temp. Mark those 2 spots and run between them. This is my way,,,not the rule or anything.

Remember, nothing happens right away when you adjust the knob,,,give it time to react. Mine runs with the line on the knob pointing straight down,,,but they all may be slightly different. I started mine the first time on 100% per LL,, but will probly not do that any more. I was impatient!

This made me laugh.  Still does.  This site has been a great source of information, and the people seem genuine.  Anyway, I'm on my second scotch, and Monday looms large...

I just ordered a clear/red with the last marble base. I came here looking for info on how to fix an old lamp,,,,,,,,see what you made me do?

still no problems with my colossus i am extremely satisfied, just beat the crap out of that wax for a few days at 100%, I bet it just needs some abuse to get the wax loose. For example, When i went to bed, the temp in the house goes down to 60' and at 70% light the wax went to the bottom as if it was just starting to warm up. So i upped it back to 100% till I saw the coils then dropped it down to 60. then gradually back to 70%. I just think that the outside environment is not being accounted for when running this bad boy. I think a lot of peeps that might have issues are being to gentle to the lamp. In my opinion, I get fustratd when I see others not enjoying their lamps and want a replacement, I hope u get it resolved. this just a kick ass lava lamp and I am SOOO tempted to get another one.  lol

Don, what color combo do you have?

I'm convinced my lamp's just going through an awkward phase. I have seen what it's capable of...I have faith that it will be back to normal this next run!

I started running my purple/yellow wax lamp today...with my modified 300 watt base.

Someone asked..or maybe i said something...i can't remember.
I managed to test out the 250w 'heat' bulb against my modified base with a 300w bulb in it.
All of these ar Farenheit. I used a infrared laser thermometer to take measurements.

250w
o) burned at 673 degrees max
o) white light
o) silver reflector base/clear top

300w
o) burned at 560 degrees max
o) white light
o) 'white frosted' top

These might be off +/- 25 degrees, but are obviously no joke.

I took pictures/measurements of both bases and I'll post that
stuff later. Right now i can say that the new base, for the colossus
i just got in the mail, is a lot shorter than the old base i have.
On my 300w modified base, the top of the bulb sits less than 1/4 of an inch
underneath of the hole in the base.

Once the globe is put into the base, I have no idea how to tell how far into
the base the globe sits. I supposed i could mark the globe and measure down into the
base to figure it out. I'm assuming that the globe sits all the way down in the base.

Yes because I made these markings BEFORE placing the globe. Otherwise the knob turns about half way (no light at all) around before even firing on, so that then became my barely lit position and I made my 50% and 100% marks accordingly

My lamp is cooled off, sitting there being quiet right now. I'll pull the globe off and compare my switch movement to yours when i get home tonite FYI.

Here's my 1st time yellow/purple report

Started lamp up  3pm Sunday at what I assume is 70% (see my other posts about the "dead zone" spot on my dial)

Spiked about an hour later.

Continued to spike (chunky stalagmites or is stalactites of lava) rising and falling until getting truly liquidy around 11pm

Lots of nice bubbling action and stretchy columns. Left it on at 70%, went to bed.

7am this morning. Two large separated from  the coil blobs hovering very low to the bottom. I turned the lamp off to go to work

My girlfriend will turn it back on at about 12pm and I'll arrive home around 10pm to report back

So this "don't leave it on for more than 8 hours of operation" rule.....

I'm assuming that means from first turn on of the lamp through to exactly 8 hours. Now correct me if I'm wrong but if the lamp isn't even following correctly until about 8 hours in,

umm......that's not a lot of lava watching enjoyment!. I'm going to of course continue to run the cycle for the next few days to see if it settles into good operation and also try adjusting the dimmer accordingly. But can some one confirm the "8 hour rule"? Is that 8 hour window from when it's turned on or after fully melted and flowing?

So far my pink/purple the is flowing flawlessly I ran it all weekend and no problems! I never knew a china lamp could flow this good. I have it dailed to about 50-60% the more I run it the better the flow I have not ran it at 100% yet but I dont think I need to. Sorry for eveybodys problems with the yellow/purple but if you get a pink/purple replacement you wont be disapointed!

al, i ran mine for over 30 hours straight with no problems. Your heat may be too high. I plan on running mine 48-60 hours straight next weekend, starting friday morning.

Maybe. You schedule is typically my schedule for running lava lamps as well. The weekend begins when the lamp goes on and doesn't end until it goes off!! lol

razerface, do you have the same color combo? (yeloow/purple)

I might turn it up for a faster start up but then dial it back to a little under 70% once it starts flowing to test
