Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Today I made my first GooKit lava lamp 52oz.

I filled a 52oz empty globe with water, allowing for an air gap and

poured off 1430 ml.  Looking at my other original 52oz

lamp(s), they looked like they were @ 250 ml of wax.

So with a total vessel size of 1430 ml (w/air gap) minus

250 ml wax that gives us 1180 ml of liquid to work with.

Remember we need 5-17 ml of surf, so subtract that from 1180 ml.

If we divide 250ml of wax by 1180ml liquid I get 21% ratio wax to liquid.

The manufacturer recommends 20%.  Remember this is at home and

not rocket science.

So I poured in 250ml of wax and let it cool.  Then I added 1170ml

of Distilled Water and started with 5ml of surf.  Currently I'm at 15ml

of surf as it warms up.  I did add .125 grams of blue dye to pre color the

wax.

It's been warming up for a few hours and is a bit slow, 2 or 3 blobs

but I'm up to 15ml of surf and don't want to go too far.  I'll cycle it

some more and see what happens.

I want it faster.

Beautiful color. Give it some good break in runs because the wax will act differently after several runs. I always use less surf than what is recommended and never had issues. This is my 52oz on its first run, I would have to check my records but I think this one only has 7ml of surf and runs awesome. I also weighed the wax for consistency, some had 200, 225 & 250 grams. I found that 225 was the sweet spot that would run great.

Ok, so it's been getting better the longer it runs...

I should mention that on the last run, I used

a Coach Lantern base because It generates

more heat than a Century base.

Nice looking Globes !

I think you did a great job!

Nice job the clear / blue chrome coach lamp looks really cool

Thank You for your comment's.

The wife and I were very happy with the end results.

I was encouraged that it turned out well, how ever

I'm not so happy with my 32oz clear/yellow. Smaller globe,

bit more sensitive to heat and I may have over surfed it.

I must have acquired a bad gallon of distilled water, I have

stuff floating in the water.  I'll wait till it's cool and filter

with a coffee filter.

But this is fun !

That one ^^^^^ looks like its flowing great.

Wow Todd, I think you're lamp looks great!!!  I luv the light blue!!!  I'm seeing some snaking flow in the 2nd pic.  Is it still flowing nice for you and did you end up adding more surf?  I'm at 15ml  now and I'm waiting for my wax to harden as we speak.  I just regoo'ed a 52 oz.  I'm going to add my dye while it's flowing because I'm afraid that I will add too much if I do it the other way.  My scale doesn't measure ..125 grams.  It doesn't go that light, so will have to eyeball it.  Was just wondering how you're regoo lamp was flowing?

The Lamps are flowing fine :-)

As far as surf/dye, start small, you can't take it back

if you do too much.  It takes some patience to get the

lamp dialed in... Every lamp is different so let it cycle some

before you make changes.  Be one with the lamp.

I started with 5 ml surf on a 20 oz globe and after a few hours run time, still wasn't happy with those stupid golfball size balls and that's it, so I just used the goo kit dropper and put a few more drops of surf in until I saw the goo start to get a tad stringy then stopped.  Now after a little bit, it's starting to have a bit more of an interesting flow.
