Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hi!

I bought boxed Mathmos Telstar from flea market for 15Eur. The lamp works well but I tried to find replacement bulbs on my local stores. They only sell Led and energy saver bulbs so they dont work on lava lamps. (thanks EU). I am trying to buy 30-40pieces set of these bulbs on a good price that I can use my lamp for years.

I found many sellers on Ebay and Amazon that sell these bulbs but when I read some reviews on these bulbs I found negative reviews that says that these bulbs work only couple of hours or couple of weeks. Bad quality I quess, or they break on that heat of lava lamps.

I just don't want to spend a lot of money to buy 40 pieces of these bulbs and then they work for only couple of days.

Mathmos and some other lavalamp specialized websites sell these bulbss on very high price but do you know where to buy/order good quality bulbs that can use in lava lamps.

Bulb is E14 R39 230V.

If you know some seller on ebay or Amazon that sell good quality lamps, please if you can tell me on Private message.

Thank you! I really love this site! I was thinking to got some more of these beatiful lamps!

I get today used boxed Mathmos Astro Baby :) I really would like to know where do you get your light bulbs, that will work good enough.. Do they sell in EU these good quality light bulbs anymore?

Saw this post, I am in the same position bulb just went out and I am in Texas.  Found a website funkylighting.com, but was hoping to find one here local in US. I know easiest thing to do is rewire, but if I can keep original, would rather do that.  If you know of a source here  in US please share, Thanks so much.

These are 40w and most mathmos need 30w so you will need a dimmer with these bulbs.

Thanks for the reply. I think these are pretty good bulbs for american/countries with 130V electrical system.

But these don't work in 230V.

Mr.Magoo thanks for the link! Maybe I am getting these ones.

There is some bulbs in ebay. Very cheap 1Eur/piece but some have reviewed that these don't work well and broken in few days. Maybe I will try some of these if they work.

So if I get these bulbs will need to convert my plug to USA plug end from euro and will need to put on dimmer, correct?

You can keep your EU plug and get a converter EU to US plug adapter (just bought one off of ebay for $4 +free ship) and then buy a normal US dimmer.OR you can convert to a US plug or a US plug with a inline dimmer. Up to you. The bulb's threaded socket is what your looking for and what you can't find in the US to often unless its online.

Hermal where are you located? If your not in the USA, I'm pretty sure you can buy bulbs off of Mathmos's website.

I live in northern Europe.

Mathmos bulbs are pretty sure high quality bulbs, but they are expensive..The price is 9.80gbp/piece (12.31174USD), so if I buy 30 pieces of them it would cost 369USD of them!

Mathmos used Phillips bulbs couple of years ago. I was asking because I know there should be good quality bulbs for better price somewhere. I found my local electrical shop is selling lava lamp bulbs for 4.30USD/piece and I think thats quite expensive too.

There is quite cheap prises in Amazon: For example https://www.amazon.co.uk/30W-Reflector-bulb-lava-lamp/dp/B002DKVS10...

But are these good quality?

Hermal, I am in Texas, in the USA so I am running into that situation.  Guess I can order 120v bulb with e14 bases from US link and try that.  Have dimmers, so not a problem.  Will let you guys know how that works!  Thanks all!
