Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hi all,

I bought a Crestworh Galaxy today that at some point in its life has been given a base extension - see pics.  I kind of think that it works but a matter of taste I suppose.

Anyhow, the lamp has stopped working - I tried the usual suspects such as the plug and fuse but these are all okay.  I then opened up the case to discover that the neutral wire has come loose - see pics.  I presume that the loose wire has broken the circuit but unsure where I need to connect it.  Can anyone help please?

Hi Lee, nice find. I've had a look inside the ones I have, it looks like yours has a different transformer to the ones in mine, not even sure if yours is original? Are you in the UK?
Personally, I'd put the neutral (blue wire) in the second connection in from the left (already has a red and a grey wire connected). Obviously, make sure it's unplugged at the wall before you attempt any fiddling.
It should be noted that this isn't how the power supply is wired on mine but both the live and neutral connections on mine have 3 wires going in.
Take it to a qualified professional if you're not willing to risk the advice of some guy online, I have been known to be wrong in the past but that's definitely what I'd do, attach to the blue wire to the second connection in from left, stand back and switch on at the wall.
Hope this helps.

Hi there and thanks for your reply,

Yep based in the UK so in for a penny in for a pound - I will try your suggestion when I get back to my works unit tomorrow.

I'd been wondering if the unit had been altered/ modified as the bulb is more like a small modern LED 2 pin push in bulb which I don't think was available in the 1970s.  What type of bulbs do yours have?

Cheers...

Lee

I only have one with a bulb holder at the moment, it has a halogen bulb. I'm just waiting for another original bulb holder which has been kindly supplied by another site member (thanks again Claude).
LED conversions are fairly common I believe, there's a programmable LED conversion which looks great, colour changes without gearboxes and motors. Message me if you'd like an ebay link.
I like original lamps (mostly) so personally, would remove the stand and put it on a desk, or source a reproduction perspex stand then put it on the floor. They look so much nicer when you look down onto into the Galaxy imho.
The stand doesn't look too bad though, it's certainly different. lol
Please let me know how you get on.
Kind regards and good luck
Tribble

Great, thanks again Tribble,

Yes will update you tomorrow.  If I can source a repo perspex stand then I may go down that route.

Cheers...

The more I look at it, the more I like the stand, it just looks rather nice. :)
Get another one or two to go underneath it? lol

I found a seller for the perspex stands but they're 45 quid (unless anyone here know's for a cheaper or secondhand one) I was lucky enough to get an original stand with one of mine.

I like the stand.  It wouldn't be my first choice but I would be very happy with it!

Well done that man!!

Followed your instructions and now its working a treat again.  See the link below to see it in all its glory.  Decided to sell it on so will list on eBay tonight.

No worries Lee, glad I could help. Good luck with the sale.
