Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hello, I’m pleased to be a member of this group. I have a collection of 16 lava lamps and other, later, Mathmos items. I need a replacement sbc bulb for an Astro Baby that is marked max 35 watt but can only find small globe sbc at 40 watts, as these aren’t reflector (I assume therefore, they generate a little less direct heat) would that be ok to use? Also, one of my Mathmos tubas has developed an intermittent fault and doesn’t cycle - I know it’s not a lava lamp but hoped someone could advise whether it’s repairable (Mathmos suggested I ask here!).

Sadly not - I need small bayonet for the Crestworth Astro Baby,

The golfballs only come as 25w (for glitter) and 40w (for lava)

You could try a socket adaptor, (SBC male to E14 Female) but it might sit the bulb too high, there's not much room in there

Or fit the 40w and use an inline dimmer, that's what I'd do...

Have you tried a 25W?

Might just take a little longer to get the lava moving, but if they did work you could buy 100 bulbs for less than £15 + postage here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BOX-OF-100-NEW-25W-SBC-GOLFBALL-BULBS/18...

My lamps take a while to get going at this time of year as the house has thick stone walls and, despite what people say,
they aren’t warm - and all my lamps are within inches of the wall, so I think 25 would be too low. Thanks for the thought, though.

I shall do that (not sure it’d do any harm to use 40w anyway!)

Good luck!

Watch out for the golfballs - some are more pear-shaped.

If in doubt, Crompton are safe

Re dimmers, Relco are good, IMHO

ive read this a few times and cant remember seeing a 35w bulb for a astro baby ?  astro baby took the 30w R39 SES E14 small reflector bulb, there was also a 25w version found in china lava/glitter lamps but ive never seen a 35w  unless its one of the new halogen type,

Astro baby was never a SBC type fitting, im wonder if the person has a astro mini?  then that would be the SBC 40watt  think a photo is need to see what they have

My error! It is a Crestworth Astro Mini sbc - I’m so used to seeing the Mathmos Baby that I took the bulb rating from my other small lava lamp which is the latter and stickered 35w max. I shall now happily purchase some 40w golf balls.

Hadn't seen those inline dimmers before. Tempted to fit them to my fluidiums, as they run too hot with the recommended bulbs. Flow is nice on 30w but they take too long to warm up.

Same company as makes the Lunar dimmers; I use the low-power version for Astros

Thanks Andy
