Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I got a couple of old astros from eBay , one had no fluid, the other had cloudy fluid.  Both are the old style bottles with the wide cap.

I cycled the cloudy one for a while and it had improved, it isn't perfect but I'm willing to keep cycling for a while to see how it goes.

I have bought some deionised water and detergent for the other bottle that had no fluid, I figured I would give that a go, but now I'm wondering whether I should just buy a Black/clear bottle and shift the fluid across in the hopes it will be (and stay) super clear.

Has anyone tried the above methods?  Does the water + soap stay clear if you manage to get it clear in the first place, or will it just degrade over time?

Ive never managed to make a fluid work for lava lamps but im pretty sure if you replace the fluid in the old bottle and pour new mathmos ( clear ) liquid in it there a big chance it will either cloud or not flow, as mathmos have changed the formula of the years,

Personally if like myself want to use older bottles for early lamps i replace all the contents from a new astro bottle, the liquid will be alittle less but then top up with de-ironised  water. less hassel :-)

Hrm, I had a feeling that may be the case.

Honestly, it's more that I don't want to waste the old wax, it seems a shame

You could try a mix of glycol propylene triton x as surf and distilled water I've manage to get a old astro bottle and many more to work but it can be a pain you need just the right balance of density to make it might trial and error and there no guarantee that the wax will work, you can filter the cloudy bottle I got filter from amazon done lots of lamps and worked a treat. Hope this helps
