Where are people actually getting this?

Nothing about it on the Mathmos web-site or any of the social media pages, as far as I can see - nothing in the way of newsletter notification either.

I believe this is the new Mathmos lamp that people are talking about  -  ( from the Mathmos website )

https://www.mathmos.com/rokit-giant-lava-lamp.html#violet-red

A flat bottom would of been much better to make it look like a bullet.

Affordable price but not nearly as nice as a Lunar!

Well, yes it's on the website now it's been launched.

I wondered where people were getting prior knowedge of the then upcoming launch date, and the 'teaser' image at the beginning of the thread, as, like I said there was no mention of it on the UK Mathmos web-site of any of their social media pages prior to the 22nd.

It was a facebook "stories" post. I don't know why they don't post it on their site or the main pages of their social media accounts. Facebook stories are kind of an obscure way of marketing things.

I didnt see it either but will ask the friend who sent me the picture. I even searched for it online but nothing came up.

I wasn’t aware of the ‘Stories’ thing, not really an avid user of Facebook so this type of thing would likely pass me by, as said bit of a strange approach, you would think you would at least hear about these things via their newsletter subscription.

Anyway, the lamp…

I said of the Saturn at the time that it looked more make-shift sci-fi prop from an early episode of Doctor Who or something, than an elegantly resolved design piece, unfortunately there seems to be a similar theme here.

Yes a more affordable ‘giant’ lamp is welcome, and as much as I would like to like it… those awkward proportions, the legs that look like an afterthought - it just lacks the sort of design finesse you would hope for, having in mind it’s still far from cheap.

Hello Guys,

I'm of the same opinion as most of you here, what we all really wanted was another stunning rocket like the fabulous Lunar.

Sadly, this isn't it.

That's why I decided to make my own range of Lunar sized rocket lamps (and a Space Shuttle.)

After I'd looked at the 'Rokit' for a while, I realised it looked slightly familiar...

Then I remembered a Lunar sized, home-made, steam punk kind of rocket lamp I made earlier this year and sold on eBay to a lamp collector...

Am I kidding myself or is there a pretty strong resemblance...

The dumpy round bottomed base with a lip/collar, short flat triangular wings, a rounded dome shaped top (rather than a bullet shaped nose cone)

Hmmm.

They say imitation is "the most sincere form of... inviting litigation" (sorry, I mean "most sincere form of flattery..")

Should I be flattered?

Your Steampunk designed lamp does look very similar to the new Mathmos Rokit!

Have you ever been contacted by Mathmos about your lamps?

They should hire you for design consultation as I think most people ( including myself ) would prefer your lamps more than the Rokit especially your super cool Orbiter.

I think Mathmos should of made/released a Bullet instead of a Rokit, like this -

Hello,

Thank you for your complimentary words about my rockets, much appreciated.

Love the way you've spliced pictures together to show all nine in a line up, very impressed!

Many thanks for that.

I did have a photoshoot set up to do this but I'm still waiting for it to be professionally "joined up" to make a picture like the one you've done! (I didn't have enough bottles to take a picture of them all in one go and the studio wasn't wide enough either!)

I have to say, I'm impressed to see them all together, many thanks.

Design consultant for Mathmos... I wish!

Many thanks,

Captain Skywalker

The resemblance to the home-made lamps probably says it all, not to take away from the makers of those, which are interesting in their own right, but you would hope for more refinement from a company with 60-odd years’ of manufacturing experience to draw from.

Maybe the lack of "refinement" in the Rokit is a tip of the hat from Mathmos to Captain S and his Starfleet - something along the lines of - if you want price-point, stripped-down big display lamps, we can do them too...

But I agree, the Captain S versions have got a certain stylish simplicity that the Rokit just doesn't

(I'd forgotten the Bullet... you're right, MH...)

Somehow it makes me a bit sad that I can't say anything good about mathmos lately, they used to be such a cool company but for whatever reason they seem to have lost they sense of style. I'd rather get a bullet replica than whats supposed to be a rocket with its crooked cap and dwarfy legs. May they saw skywalkera orbiter and gave up in the middle of the design process as they didnt see a way to even remotely compete with that anyway.
