Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hey guys! Anyone have some good experience with fluorescent GooKit colors (blue and green)? I just refurbed a grande lamp using the fluorescent blue dye and am trying to figure out the best way to show it off--will it work well with a black light flood light in the base or is my best option a stick black light behind it?

Also, I love the white color during the daylight, but would it affect the fluorescent-ness if I added just a tad of regular blue dye? I'm also thinking about adding a drop or two of blue food coloring to the water.

Thanks for any tips/suggestions!

the 75w UV bulb is not strong enough on my Grande Fluidium.

Thanks for the suggestion! Yes, it is GooKit wax. So far, I have not been impressed with the flow...I may add some epsom salt if it doesn't get going. I used 60ml of surf initially and then added about 30ml more to no avail.

Yes

Are you running goo kit wax?

Yes it glows but the wax is barely melt.

It still looks a little solid. Not hot enough.

That's what my grande looks like at the moment, even with a regular bulb. I'm going to experiment with bulbs and epsom salt.

If I remember correctly I think it's 7 liters, but I'm not 100% sure.

(I have another one, brand new, but I need to filter it as it is very cloudy).

The salt got the lamp flowing nicely! I had a 75w black light bulb that I stuck in the base to experiment with, but the wax barely moved after six hours. Is a black light (the stick kind) mounted behind the globe the best way to get the fluorescent effect? I feel like the brightness of the regular white bulb in the base would diminish the effect.

Matt,

the 75w UV bulbs are not real UV light.

If you want real "black light " effect, the best is to run the lamp with regular bulb and light it with a real neon uv light (stick one yes)

What I did is use a reptile ceramic heater and use 2 external blacklights. The ceramic heater omits no light.

This.  The black light spotlights are garbage and you will not get the effect you crave (unless wax tinted light purple is your goal).  You need to use a fluorescent black light (tube style bulb).

Thanks so much for the suggestions! The tube style black light works great when the lamp is off...but when I turn the lamp on, the white light from the base bulb "overrides" the black light. How have you guys fixed this?

This seemed like a good place to show my first successful goo kit. The color looks black, but it's actually a very dark violet. However, I also mixed in some fluorescent blue so that, with the lights off, it becomes a whole new color. The light source is a fluorescent black light off to the side. Many thanks to the good Dr. for his advice, the most important of which was patience!
