Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I heard that the light bulbs used for lava lamps(that produce heat ) are outlawed as of.Jan 1st to make or import in the U.S.I guess that will screw lava lamp owners, right. Any thoughts??

There was a thread about this some time ago, that bulb regulation doesn't affect the bulbs we use in out lamps so it won't be a problem.

There are several threads about this, BUT Rodridgo, you're wrong - this year they're phasing out 60W and 40W and those *are* the bulbs we use.

I don't know what this means for the lava lamp industry. I have stocked up on bulbs and am kinda done buying lamps, so I'm in good shape for the future.

But I just read this: "Some incandescent bulbs are exempt from the law, such as colored light bulbs and incandescents used in appliances."

It really sucks, too, 'cause I love incandescents. I hated CFLs, but luckily I like LED bulbs for the most part.

Erin, I believe the a15 bulbs we use fall under that category of exempt bulbs since the a15 are appliance bulbs for fridges, freezers, etc

I remember Brad posted a really useful link that detailed which bulbs are included in the ban and which are not. According to that article, Home Depot will run out around spring while lowes will have stock for longer. I'm gonna just buy a couple of each and hope they don't disappear because we need the heat from these bulbs so LED and CFL won't do.

I just read a couple more articles on this and in every single one they talk about the "standard 60-40w bulb" being banned, I think this ban only applies to the "standard" bulb which is the normal light bulb we all use to light our homes. The 40w "appliance" falls under another category and I believe not affected by the ban.

This ban is to affect the bulbs Americans buy the most which is the standard medium base bulb. A couple of years and they banned the standard 100w then the 75 got phased out and not they're phasing out the 60-40w standard but appliance bulbs aren't included since rarely anyone buys that to light their home. It's just mostly used to light appliances, and our lava lamps. So hopefully they're only going for the big standard sized bulb

Thanks for the info Rodrigo - good to know!

Yeah, this has been a "hot" topics (pun intended) for several years now.  Those rat-batards on the Hill are making life miserable for everyone!!!
