About Your First Lava Lamp:
first lamp @ 15. just started collecting for real this year. first lamp was a black base and top with clear liquid and red lava. pinholes in base. it shorted out though. so it no longer works:( wish it did though. was always into them. parents thought it was a phase. now some odd years later i'm collecting them, and my family just laughs and shakes their head:)

in the light socket there is a screw. remove the screw to free the socket. then tape off around the cord grommet to avoid scratching the base and take a pair of adjustable pliers and squeeze the plastic grommet that secures the cord in the base. you're gonna want to squeeze it in the direction the cord is flat if that makes sense, the grommet is 2 pieces and your going to squeeze the little piece into the cord and bigger piece. as you squeeze hard, pull out and now the cord is free. pull it out the top with the socket and check/ reconnect the wires. you will probably need a soldering iron to do so unless you have one that uses screws. plug in and carefully check everything before putting it back together, the hardest part is removing the cord and screwing the socket back to the base, but I got big ham hands, yours will probably work better. lemme know if you get stuck and how it goes!
