OK - several years ago I purchased glitter liquid here to fill two custom Grande lamps and followed the sealing process to a -T- from the person from whom I purchased the liquid and glitter. As time went about a year plus in the glitter began to lose all it's luster and the liquid began to turn gold so I decided to empty the bottles and replace with goo kits. I was surprised when I took the original aluminum caps off and saw the caps I purchased underneath to replace the original rubber stoppers had warped so bad it was about to fall into the lamp. As you can see the lid is really warped. The second cap is not as bad but you can clearly see it was on it's way to doing the same and notice the color coating on the stoppers came off probably the reason the liquid turned gold. I actually loved the color of the liquid when it went from clear to gold...to bad the glitter faded That being said - buyers beware when you purchased these caps.
Worlds first custom 27'' Rainbow Glitter lamp using all original Lava Lite fluids and glitter.tag:oozinggoo.ning.com,2018-02-06:1566398:Topic:6690932018-02-06T21:06:12.965ZThe Lamp Caretakerhttps://oozinggoo.ning.com/profile/TheLampCaretaker

Over a year ago I purchased a bunch of rainbow gold glitter lamps from LavaLite when they went on sale for 15.00 each.
Over a year ago I purchased a bunch of rainbow gold glitter lamps from LavaLite when they went on sale for 15.00 each. I emptied two 27'' grande lave globes and refilled them using the liquid and glitter from the smaller 14'' rainbow glitter lamps. I now have a matching pair of 27'' rainbow glitter lamps with original Lava Lite liquid and glitter that are spectacular. I placed the globes on the 50th Anniversary gold bases and here is what the lamp looks like in my kitchen. They are now in my great room one on each side of my tv. If you want to see what they look next to the tv let me know and I'll gladly upload more photos. Photos make the lamp look very orangish but their actually more gold than orange. They look even better when dimmed a little. I placed several of the regular 14'' rainbow glitter lamps next to the 27'' for size comparison. I enjoy making my own custom lamps aside from just collecting. More designs to follow soon.
On-going list of quality issues with Lava Lite lamps (post-2003 lamps)tag:oozinggoo.ning.com,2017-12-21:1566398:Topic:6657822017-12-21T03:26:12.704ZErinhttps://oozinggoo.ning.com/profile/erin9

I wanted to consolidate my experiences/posts into one thread for those who are looking to purchase "new"er lava lamps, specifically ones from 2003 and after. Most of us know that 2003 is when Lava Lite shifted production of their lamps to China. Since that time, there's been an obvious decline in quality, though many new lava lamp fans may not know the difference. I'm not going to argue about how production should be shifted back to the US, but rather send out a strong warning about the quality of most of these lamps. I will never buy a used lamp from 2003 or afterwards. I will only buy them new from places that have good return policies.

Why am I doing this? Mostly to inform others, I guess. I will fully admit that sometimes I'll buy a lamp to run it, photograph it and then return it. Sadly, I keep far too many of them and they end up being donated or junked.

August 2014. "Tornado" lamp with color LEDs. So, this lamp really confused me. There was supposed to be glitter in it, but the one I bought had what looked to be "snow" like the stuff you see in snow globes. I did get a replacement from Lava Lite. The glitter one eventually came unglued from the base. I glued it back together and donated it.

July 2015. Rainbow Grande from Amazon.com. Flow was great, but for the price paid, I wasn't willing to settle for the terrible spray job on the rainbow glass. There were imperfections and smudges in the paint job. Returned.

November 2015. 52oz. "Premier" lava lamp from Spencer's. Boring flow and not great spray job on globe. I think I junked this one. I can't remember.

June 2016. 32oz. Ombre glitter with blue metallic base from Spencer's. The glitter came clumped together. At the time I bought it, I didn't know it was a flaw. I don't mind it really, but the glitter is not supposed to stick together like this. I kept this one. You can see in the picture that the glitter is chunkier than normal glitter lamps from Lava Lite.

June 2016. 32oz. "Chalkboard" glitter lamp from Spencer's. Super cool. Clear liquid. Good (slow) flow. No issues yet, but it does seem as if some of the glitter is starting to clump together.

June 2016. 20oz. pink/purple painted globe with chrome base from Spencer's. Crystal clear fluid. Nice base and cap. Lava flow is ok, but lamp overheats after a few hours and the lava gets all bubbly.

November 2016. 52oz. clear/neon blue from Spencer's. Crap in the wax after 2nd run. I returned it.

Early 2017. 32 oz. "Northern Lights" tri-colored lamp w/ white wax. Clear, decent flow. Discovered after a handful of runs that the wax is sticking to the top and bottom of the globe. Donated.

Can't remember date: 32oz. rainbow glitter with gold base and cap from Target. Kinda neat, but the color of the glitter started leeching into the liquid, so I returned it.

Can't remember date: 32oz. red/black "Day of the Dead" lamp from Spencer's. Not my normal fare, but it's a cool lamp. Clear. Overheats easily. I don't believe there's any stuck wax on this one... but not sure.

2017. Red/Yellow Custom Grande with gold base and cap. Bought this direct from Lava Lite for $80 shipped. Gorgeous flow. Clear, Beautiful lamp. No problems. Yet.

Oct. 2017. 32oz. "Lava Insiders" lamp. Purple (says blue) with white wax. Neat metallic speckled base and cap. Flow is some of the worst I've seen in their newer stuff. Otherwise and OK lamp.

Feb 2018 - Mother of Pearl 32 oz. lamp from Spencer's. Gorgeous. Too new for a review.

Overall, quality is still crap, I think. The liquid seems to be clear, which is great, but flow is mediocre and nearly all lava lamps I get suffer from wax that stucks to the side of the globe around the bottom.

On the plus side, the bases and caps are good, and despite a lot of people not liking the "wrapped" bases and caps, I think they're kinda neat.

Unfortunately, with all the issues I have, I don't tend to buy many of the new ones that come out.

Your mileage may vary, however.

I'm fairly sure Lava Lite headquarters has a picture of me somewhere labelled "worst customer ever" as I am rarely kind when talking about that company.

Well, that happened fast! What started as a way to test my beginner HTML skills and share my love for lava lamps has grown into this fantastic community-driven resource. Thank you! I first published http://oozinggoo.com in early 1997. The internet was a different place then. We quickly became the top 3 search results for "lava lamp" on Google as well as Yahoo, Alta Vista, Magellan and others. (Remember those?)

The site started with the gallery. I uploaded photos of my collection that was mostly obtained at thrift shops and flea markets around the Bay Area. Then, to round out the Gallery, I began to dig around online searching for other vintage lamps. It was an unknown world in a way because there was just no information online yet. This was before Google image search of course, so it took hours to find anything new.

On a whim, I thought there must be other people out there - other lava lamp lovers, others obsessed with these crazy lamps and so I taught myself how to host a message board dubbed the Forum. It quickly became the place to be for about a dozen early Goo Heads. It was a tight group that grew fast; there was a pent up need for a place to come together. It did not come without feuds and controversy. There is amazing community of lava collectors here and I really want to thank all of you that make OG what it is today.

Somewhere in those early days, I remember I had moved down to L.A. at this point, I bought a beautiful old Squiggle Aristocrat with bad lava. And being the nerdy kind of guy that I am, I decided to fix it; remove the cloudiness, and get the lava flowing again. Well, needless to say, this was much harder than I originally anticipated. This led me down a long path that became the Formulae section of OG. I found some obscure formulae on the interwebs (not easy at the time). I remember scouring old bulletin boards for instance. I tested the recipes and refined them a bit, edited the instructions and added photos of my process. While searching ebay for vintage gold to add to my collection, to my shock and horror, there were people selling "How To Make Your Own Lava Lamp Instructions" which were verbatim copies of the OG Formulae section!

Being the top search result for lava lamps, I was constantly asked where to buy them. This was before they were ubiquitous, before they were available at sites like Amazon and Target. So, I called up Haggerty Enterprises and told them about OG. (This is before they even had a website). I said that I thought I could sell them online. I think I heard a chuckle on the other end of the line. I wanted to buy a few and see how they did. They explained that the smallest order they would fulfill was a gross, 144 lamps. At this point, I'm in grad school, struggling to get by on student loans. I convince my wife that I wasn't crazy and that there was actually a demand and somehow we scraped enough cash together for that first load. They sold fast! One problem, I didn't own a car. So every day on my way to UCLA, I would strap 6 to 10 lava lamps on the back of my Vespa and drop them off at UPS. I really wish I had a photo of that set-up. LL boxes piled high, curling up and over my back as I cruised down Santa Monica Boulevard!

I could tell stories on end that could bore you to death of OG and searching the back alleys for the holy grail of lava lamps, but I don't want to bore you. 20 years is a long time and my life has changed tremendously. I'm still the inquisitive nerd, but I'm also a father, a husband, an architect, an entrepreneur and now a real estate developer. Obviously my time is my scarcest resource. You may not see me here as much, but I'm always peeking in (I can't believe I've become a lurker!) and enjoying everything going on. OG would not be the wonderful community that it is without all of our wonderful members and moderators! Thank you! I have no intentions of shutting down Oozing Goo any time soon. May the lava flow for 20 more years!

Keep flowing,

Hi Gooheads

I have a few lamps I haven't displayed in ages (I'm really fussy about I arrange my lamps, and some just clash with the others/the room's decor.) I'm saving for oral surgery so ready to sell just about everything I own (everything except the Mathmos lamps! :P)

So, all the lamps in the attached pictures are for sale.

$70 for Fantasia fiber optic

$50 each for the gold Starlite and Black/Clear lamp

$15 each for the Lava Brand 16"s…

$15 each for the Lava Brand 16"s (blue/purple)

$10 each for everything else

...Or just make me an offer. Will do discounts for multiple lamps.

I'm happy to box them and get quotes, but I doubt it will be worth posting

*Edit: Local pick up prefered
Great deal from AurasGlow lava lamps!tag:oozinggoo.ning.com,2014-11-28:1566398:Topic:5603162014-11-28T01:58:37.341ZErinhttps://oozinggoo.ning.com/profile/erin9
