You may not need to make a heat shield for your century lamps. Try a R16 40W bulb. If that doesn't work then you may need a heat shield.

Making a few more heat shields for the Century lamps. This is the only way this lamp will run great with and while using a 40watt a-15 frosted bulb on that plastic lid base insulation.

What I used to make this happen using the extra 52z Aristocrat cap that I have saved over time. I cut of that 1/2" top using dremel disk.

Next I cut down straight 1/8" all the way around and them cut the bottom off right at the flat edge. I then used a needle nose pliers to bend tabs down REMEMBER not to bend tabs down to far they will break off if you try to re-bend them back up LL used cheap metal.

Once done I straightened the tabs with the pliers all the way around for that perfect fit. And away they went to the Century lamps.

Only a handful seem to catch the attention of collectors such as the metallic Moon lamp.

Whether you are trying to rebalance an existing fluid or creating your own fluid it is important to know how the density of the lamp works. The short explanation is that as the wax heats up and melts it expands and it's density lowers. The density of paraffin wax is very close to the density of water. In Lava Lamps paraffin wax is mixed with other chemicals to make it just slightly more dense than the liquid it is in when cool. As it heats up it expands and becomes less dense and begins to float. When it reaches the top it contracts as it cools down and becomes more dense and sinks.

To make a Lava Lamp flow you need to find the sweet spot for this change in density to cause flow. This can be done by adding denser fluids which allows the wax to float. You only need to add a small amount to your liquid mixture. This depends on if you are starting from scratch or using an existing liquid.

If you are starting from scratch it is important to start with either distilled or reverse osmosis water. That is because tap water can have high contents of minerals and other contaminants that will alter the density of the water and potentially introduce chemicals that will shorten the life of your Lava Lamp.

Propylene Glycol can be easily found online. In the USA it can be found at Tractor Supply stores. Beyond adjusting densities in Lava Lamps propylene glycol has many other uses so if you are having trouble finding some look for suppliers of industries that use it.

Polyethylene Glycol 300 can be found online.

You will also need to add a surfactant to the liquid. This should be done before turning the lamp on since without this the wax will stick to the glass. Two surfactants that are currently known to be suitable for lava lamps are sodium lauryl sulfate and Triton X-100. The more surfactant you add the higher chance you will have for the liquid to be cloudy. Anything over 4% will definitely cloud the liquid so using a mixture of the two surfactants allows you to add smaller amounts of each to reduce the risk of clouding

Start with a base mixture that is slightly less dense than the original fluid. A good base to start with when working with Lava Lite lamps from the 90's is as follows.

24% PEG 300

75% water

1% SLS

0.01% Triton X-100 (1ML)

If working with modern lava lamps skip the propylene glycol and PEG 300 altogether and use pure water with surfactants and modify the density with the steps below.

To alter the density add PEG 300 in small increments of a few milliliters of PED 300 at a time while the lamp is fully heated. This can be done with a dropper, syringe, or any other tool that allows for measurement down the the milliliter level. Once the wax starts to flow watch how it performs and if it runs for a normal 8 hour cycle you are done. If it overheats you need to reduce density by adding water.

The Heritage line was a set of models meant to be a throw back to some of Lava Lite's most popular lamps. The project was spearheaded by Dale Zalusky. The Heritage line was meant to be a return to grace by Lava Lite through offering a premium collectors lamp to the collector community. Despite having much higher quality bases and caps, the formula inside the globes were some of the worst produced globes at the time. Collectors were disappointed, but since these models used standard 32, 52, and 250oz globe sizes the bases have become collectible since older USA made globes can be used with them.

Base is 3.25" high and the spray adds about 5.5 - 6.5 inches to the height, making it about 10" high or less.
Per Jonas: This is a "geyser lamp", made in Taiwan, sold in US and UK, and less common actually than the average old French boiler. Why? They broke in shipment - to stores, to buyers, etc. And most I've seen in collections got broken, too. They came in two sizes, small and large; small with black or dark translucent blue plastic bases, large (shown here) with metal. Both sizes then came in three shapes: cone (shown here), hourglass, and football.

Per tweavs: The boiler in the middle was sold as a 'Geyser' lamp at Spencer Gifts back in 2001-2003.

Per Erin/Mike: These were also sold at Kohl's and Walgreen's around 2005. Serial # 78106721.
