Yes, vaseline softens. In my other trials, I used only beeswax and paraffin. The beeswax melts at 65 Celsius degrees and hard at 20 Celsius degrees. Paraffin melts at 58 Celsius degrees and hard at 20 Celsius degrees. Vaseline melts at 55 Celsius degrees and greases at 20 Celsius degrees.
If you are going to use beeswax, adding wax or paraffin will reduce the melting point. This means using a lower wattage bulb to melt the wax. So the lava lamp will work cooler.
i was just thinking the other day about vaseline jelly wether it would soften wax, i may have to try it and see if it will
