Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I recently bought three lamps and for some reason one (my favorite of course) the wax just sits in one blob and doesn't rise or do anything. Is it fixable or am I out the dough? Thanks to any and all.

Thanks all I was curious as to what the fluid was and will read up on tweaking just to see what it will do. I imagine just off the top of my head that one can add too much and screw it up. Now I have to figure out what propane glycol is. Never heard of it. Also I have noticed in one I got on line that it has a lot of foreign debris floating around in it and that was why the "if I can strain it question" or if it'll do any good to do so.

Thanks Tim for the heads up on the smart astro LEDs...no sense investing that much only to have more issues.

What is a good source for propylene glycol the clear version.

Thanks Tim that  thread 'splained a lot and I am of the group that is figuring out what PG does well most of it for that matter. Tinkering with the ones I have and cycling through they seem to be getting better and may just go with the epsom salts and good water a little at a time to see the results who knows may even try a drop or two of soap what I'm after is different size shapes rather than the round blobs to give it a little character and visual appeal.

PG like salts increases the density of the water, when its denser then the wax the wax will flow - this is the basic principal of lava lamps.

That makes all the sense in the world now. And I 'spose the glycol adds to the flow factor to along with the soap for vicosity.

Glycol increases the densty of the water, soap brakes down the wax so this is what causes it be become bubblie and sometimes more stringie.

A verry small amout of soap MAY be needed (1-2 drops) but just see how it goes as it probably has surf (same effect as soap) in it allready.

Thanks again Tim and when I get the nerve to take the cap off (gotta figure a way to recap it) I will surly try the epsom salt, soap/surf and a dash of glycol if needed. These things definitely need some more bubbly going on as two out of three are just ping pong ball size. And as you say one drop at a time but first and foremost I do need to filter the fluid as they all have debris not so much the LL ones but the el cheapo Peace model I have has lots of fuzzy junk in it. Was thinking about using some coffee filters as they are rather handy.
