These are my two (decent) Living Jewels. I have one other that has suffered from the effects of age by the glitter squares becoming clear, and the chemical (Trichlorotrifluoroethate) becoming discoloured and cloudy. I have done a little research on this chemical. Its no longer available because it is one of the many CFCs that causes degredation of the ozone layer, and was banned in 1988. Trichlorotrifluoroethane (or Freon 113) was a solvent that had many uses in the home as a dry cleaning kit, or commercially in the photographics industry etc. Its classed as a level 2 carcinogen, although this effect only seems to happen to people who have had heavy exposure for many years by inhalation.
Ive got to say, it may make me a freak, but it makes me love my living Jewels even more!! (beautiful but deadly), and although its a shame they cant be made any more, its nice to have something thats becoming rarer, and it so beautiful it knocks the socks off most other glitter lamps!!
