Always wanted a lava lamp after seeing one in a neighbor's apartment when I was about 8 or 9 yrs old. Finally, about 8 years ago I got one at a yard sale. I did not want to buy a new one from the stores because they just did not look right to me. Due to changes in life it went into storage for a year or so. Now it has place on my desk where it will stay!

As I discovered from this site I have a Century model lava lamp with gold tone aluminum base and red lava. I purchased it at a yard sale about 8 years ago. It had a $12 price sticker that fell off recently. The fluid appears to be a little cloudy but for me it does not detract from its appeal. The coil at the bottom has what appears to be black bits of the lava stuck in it. Perhaps a previous owner ran it for too long or used too high a wattage bulb in it.
My currently 15 month old daughter likes to watch the lamp too pointing and babbling at it when she sits with me at my desk.
I'll post a picture of it on my desk in the future. I also have a rock salt lamp on my desk that provides a pleasing glow.
