My First Lava Lamp was:
“Doctor, I believe I’ve contracted a case of Lava-Simplex”

I've always wanted a Lava Lamp since I was a kid growing up in the 1970's – but then, who didn’t?

That said, nothing could have been further from my mind than Lava Lamps when I browsed through a local thrift store recently. Yet there it was! I had stumbled across what looked like a completely dead, but mysteriously familiar and very cool looking shape. It was a Lava Lamp - exactly like the ones I used to admire so much as a kid. I couldn’t resist – I mean sure it probably wouldn’t work; the wax inside the globe appeared to be frozen in time from whenever it had last been operated. Oh well, the base was cool – it even had little holes for the light to shine out, and I thought I could probably find something to replace the bad “lava” if it wouldn’t work correctly.

I took my “new to me” light home, plugged it in, and after a couple of hours I witnessed that oh so beautiful silky smooth and surrealistically enchanting motion that I had all but forgotten about. Wow, it’s not dead I jubilantly thought to myself. It’s actually melting – and reforming… and what’s this – it’s actually growing! Oh that wax! A beautiful deep, dark blood red, and I’d swear it was transforming into a life form all to itself – not the spongy gelatin like balls of goop found in the Chinese made lamps of today.

After thoroughly immersing myself in the Oozing Goo website, I have discovered that what I had purchased was a vintage screw cap Century Model 100 with a Starlight Base. Inside the globe is red wax with clear liquid (date under the cap shows it was made in July 1975).

What a relaxing way to pass the hours, staring at the old Lava Lamp like a cat staring into a fish bowl – only I have no desire to consume the wax… except with my eyes of course!

I am looking forward my newly rediscovered “Adventures in Lava”, but it’s has to be accompanied with beaming starlite from a gold anodized aluminum base made in the U.S.A. (or UK made Mathmos).
