1st Edition Fluidium - No Heat Shield?!?

Hey :)

I bought a 1st edition Fluidium awhile back(The one with the circle logo)

And it doesn't have a Heat Shield.

Bought it from a retro store for £2.50 so was rather a bargain!

Can anyone tell me if this is safe to use? 

Also what bulb do I need for it.

I got a 40W R50 SES Spotlight bulb but when I put the bottle back of the base it sits on the bulb

and makes it uneven.

Any help would be great.
