Colossus Lamps available!

Found oozinggoo.com when I was looking for ways to repair the Grande I picked up at CostCo a few years ago.  It's one of the Chinese made ones that has gone extremely cloudy and ceased to flow (going to try replacing the fluid one of these weekends). 

It was here that I found out about really big Lava lamps.  I was bowled over by videos of the  Colossus lamps and really want to see if I could get one, I couldn't find them available anywhere so I wrote LavaLite.  I wanted to let this group know what I got this from Lava Lite today:

Yeah the dimmer switch is the biggest deign flaw of this lamp. EXTREMELY impractical. Like I said before if LL's intent was to sell these to doctor's offices and casinos then I'm sure they took A LOT of these lamps back in returns because no business owner is going to sit there and adjust these all day or heat/cool their business for the sake of their lava lamp.

It's a HUGE pain in the ass for me too to constantly have to duck down and make adjustments and it's just plain ugly to have make marks on the lamp and have the lamp turned dial/cord facing me. I'm quickly falling out of love with LL products and doubt I will ever buy anything new from them. I'd rather make my own lamps with goo kits and old LL lamps

another idea im going to try that i think might be easier for me and possibly others is to use regular corded lamp dimmer rather then the built in one. it could be easily and more clearly marked. i dont really want to mark my base with a marker pen so i have little stickers on the "sweet spot" and at 1 and 100% but i have my lamp in a dark corner so i have to get a flashlight and get down on my knees to adjust it lol.

And honestly how do we know these aren't "returns"? How hard would it be for them to simply re-box lamps?

I don't think they've been reboxed. As others have noticed, these boxes arrive covered with dust. I'm not hating on LL; after all, we are getting steep discounts off the original MSRP. Even if it isn't working properly yet, the customer service has been phenomenal. Al, have you tried the 200w bulbs, and did it help?

They "decided" to get rid of them after they located a source of bulbs. The bulbs that used to be used were discontinued because of the bulb ban. It makes no sense to keep 75 lamps worth of boxes sitting around taking up space forever. They were sold at a discount price to make sure they all sold. People wanted the colossus so they got rid of the remaining stock. Sorry there is no conspiracy here.

For the record I have had problems with my clear/red, but they have went away with use. I have no experience with the other lamps, but I think with time they will fix themselves as well with use.

I'm not happy with how my lamp is working, but when was the last time you called a corporation larger than the local widget factory and actually talked to a human in the main office as opposed to a call center in India? You can't beat that! Short of offering an operational product from the start (important, I know!) they have been so good to all of us after the fact. Good customer service after a bad experience is often the best way to hook a lifetime customer. I'm impressed with that, at least.

Like Autumn, I too have has issues with my clear red, but nothing that did not clear up with a bulb change (westinghouse for me) and some time keeping it almost too hot and too cool intermittently and like others once I get it flowing right I leave it there, hubby and I just have been unplugging it instead of touching the dimmer again. At times mine still gets a bit hot and stalls, so we turn it off for 30 min or so then plug it back in and it's good to go.  Because these are lamps that are made to take some abuse I think they need to be tortured a bit before they are good to go, a break in period of sorts.

I know it's been discussed before, but short of filtering through 65 pages, can you tell me where to find the Westinghouse (or other) brand bulbs that have worked better than the Phillips bulbs?

you know i just remembered something, when the new neons came back out after the recall i can remember quite a few people having trouble with the green one disconecting from the coil. mine did that also but with use it stopped and is one of my fav 52ozs now. i think the same can be said for my colossus...a few weeks of running and it will be right as rain.

also i know LL has had probs in the past but to be fair they are doing a great job of getting their act together. i had a prob with a grande i bought on amazon and susan replaced it for me and let me keep the old one. i cant say i know of any other company that would do that!
