A real Crestworth Princess (also apparently called a Rocket way back) has been a holy grail lamp of mine for quite some time. But given several reasons, such as cost, living in the states, shipping, etc. it will likely be quite some time before I get my hands on one. Never mind the fact that I've never even seen one come up for sale. As far as I know, there is only a single one on this side of the pond, beautifully restored by Critter. So a couple years ago I started to look into what it would take to create my own, not perfect, but close enough to fill that void, even if just barely.
The glass and spun metal solid copper parts I took from Goolamp's GL200, but didn't bother with the flared metal base he sells it with, instead planned to make my own base and legs. I was originally planning on doing a pretty close copy, almost an attempt at a replica, with wooden legs and all. Bought a nice slab of Walnut for the legs, etc. But realized I'm no where near talented enough to make legs I'd be happy with, at least not for a long time. So as I brainstormed, I tried to think of ways to get a base and legs made relatively cheap, that would still look good. That's when I found sendcutsend. You upload a drawing of a part you design, choose a material and thickness, and they cut it for you and ship you the parts. But sadly, the only wood they offer is plywood, but have all kids of metals, in my case 0.5" or 12.7mm thick T6 Aluminum plate. The 2 black rings are also T6 Aluminum, with a bolt going down through the top plate, through the leg and threaded into the bottom plate.
The lamp stands at just over 4.5ft with a total volume of just over 5 gallons, or about 3 Grandes and currently heated by a 200w BR40 style reflector bulb. The fill is 3 of Ozonegifts new Ooze Pack lava kits. It currently white wax with blue master fluid, which looks great in the evening. But during the day, the wax doesn't get lit up that well and kinda gets washed out by the blue fluid in the top 2/3s of the lamp. So next week I will be swapping it out for clear liquid and dye the wax teal.
