Gem Light Simplex 1960's lava lite

Could any one out there tell me what to do to get my lava lite"s flowing. I bought my second one today and the goo doesn't flow, it stays in one big ball at the top.  Help!!  I other one is doing the same thing. I'd appreciate any suggestions as to how to correct the problem
