Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Has anyone actually used the metal screen they provide in the GooKit over the usual

spring coil?

I am wondering why they put a screen in the kit instead of a coil? Cheaper?

Will the lava flow the same?

Yep, those look like the good kind. Nice stainless steel.

Will this work okay in a Grande (I am GooKitting one)?

I think because its cheaper.

I dont think that the flow is better with the screen, but i have not tested this. I dont want to use this screens.

I bought my own Coils. The strings are 1m long and 15mm in diameter. Stainless Steel. One String cost 15 Euro + Tax and shipping.

Hmm, are you sure about the 5 to 8mm thing?

I mean, that sounds way too small to me for something that's 250oz :\

LOL!!  I heard that ;)

Looking for it on the McMaster-Carr website, but need to know what it's called so I can look it up.

I know you got yours in the UK, but I would need a discription to find it. This website has zillions of springs :\

Endless compression spring (sounds like what the US would call them), great! thanks much, now I know what to search for :)
Never used the screen, I just re use the coils inside the lamp. Make sure you have 2 coils in there if its a grande

2 coils? that's a new one on me. Pretty sure all my Grande's have only one.

Do they flow better with 2?

yes i am sure there is a pic somewhere, I just sealed my last grande too. darn

Oops, they do have 2 coils, my bad!!

Oh! I only checked one of them, I have 3.

I tried to measure the width (they are both the same) and it's about 1/4''.

After good warm-up about 4 hours, they flow very nice, but I have these solid stainless ones which I am think of using.

As I said before, I have 11 to 14mm wide, very hard high quality metal.

The largest spring in the Grande is (measuring from the outer edge) 3 3/4'' and the smaller one is 2 1/2

I have made one set of coils using 13mm wide SS. It is so hard, regular wire cutters would not even scratch it.

I ended up having to saw it with a Dremil and diamond cutting wheel.

To join the ends, I wraped ) 0.015'' SS wire rated for use in temps up to 900, so anyone who thinks this wont last my

lifetime is seriously mistaken :)

I will make 3 sets, one for each lamp, but will do only one to see how it flows.

Still waiting for my fluorescent blue from GooKit before I can get started :\
