Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I used to have one years ago. My daughter received one for Christmas which sparked a renewed interest in me. I know I want a 52 ounce and was wondering if there is only one brand found in stores or are there others and which should I stay away from? I'm just trying to get a quality one to enjoy.

Thanks a bunch
David

Another choice would be to go for the older vintage of american made lava lamps on eBay or via private sale.

Have the seller's tell you the cap numbers on the 52oz globes, you can gather the year of production and choose something from the 80s or 90s.

The older lamps from the 70s & 80s with the screw type caps are nice choices too, but you have to inspect the pictures carefully to insure it has not been mistreated over the years.

It all depends on your budget. Feel free to ask questions.

I would opt for a vintage, USA-made Lava Lite. The new Lava World ones suffer from quality issues. Check eBay. Old ones are kinda scarce at the moment, but they pop up all the time. A decent vintage 52 oz. or 32 oz. will run you $30 - $70 and they are spectacular to have. ;)

These are Carlisles from the 1970s. I paid about $50 for each of them (including shipping). They flow amazingly well and are crystal clear. :)

Good luck with your search and ask a lot of questions!

I'm undecided but would like a vintage one too at some point. Thank you all for the advice.
Made a deal on one that my daughter is going to pick up. I will be looking at an Astro when I get back to civilization. As it stands I barely get a signal on my phone and I really need to find out the conversion on money and how I pay as well as what combo I want. I'm at my aunts taking care of my gram while my aunt is vacationing in the Bahamas. She lives out in the country.

Thanks again.

Hey David,

If you want a brand new, high quality, good functioning lamp, then I would recommend buying a Mathmos Lava lamp.
They are more expensive due to the shipping and customs fees, but they are well worth it!
For the size you are looking for, I would recommend an Astro, but the Astrobabies and Telstars are really nice as well.
I get all my Mathmos lamps from this excellent company -

You will need an up-converter to run the Mathmos lamps here in the USA, as they are wired for the UK.
This is what I use ( vt500 ) -

You can use a universal power bar to run several UK lamps at once -

Go with a Mathmos lava lamp, you will not be sorry. :)

If I'm correct in my figuring, an Astro will cost around $115.00. Give or take a little. Does that sound right for those of us in the states?
I didn't mean for it to sound like I was complaining about the price. I was just trying to make sure I was clear on the exchange rate and how much one would be. It was supposed to read " Does that sound about right? " I don't mind paying for quality.

I'm excited to get one. It's just going to be a little longer then first thought.

The only problem I see is wanting one of every color and liking the Telstars as well.

Did I miss where they told how many ounces they are? Just curious. Also, when paying. How does that work?
I'll have to do more reading on American made ones and the companies. Learn what to look for. I don't know that I would ever rewire one. MOre then likely buy a converter. Never say never though.

Thanks again for all the help and advice.'
Look on ebay and craigslist for lamps with perforated bases, especially if the globe has a screw-on cap.  These features indicate that the lamp is older=made in the USA.  If possible, look for pictures of globes that are flowing
