So, see attached photos, the company who produced this lamp was in business from 1996 to 2004 then was dissolved.
Unit was produced in Japan and is marked such on the bottle cap
After many nights running the unit the lava does not do anything other than make a small column 1.5 to 2"tall and that's it.
So thinking of making a glitter lamp or maybe have kirk convert it to glitter.
So the question is, how does one determine if the contents of the bottle are safe to remove in terms of dangerous chemicals, etc. Does one go by year produced? Company who produced it? Etc.
Is there safe way to empty if one cannot determine based on other criteria and if so, is it a lengthy and pain in the ass process.
I think this unit would look nice converted but hope it's a simple affair as I have an apartment which makes it tough to do certain types of work.
Thanks
Rod

The fluid in some of the early fast glitter lamps was pretty toxic but your lava lamp fluid won't do you any harm.
Okay, so assuming there is little worry of toxicity even though I would wear protective glass & such anyway and thick dish gloves, what is the best way to empty this bottle and clean it?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Is there a DIY on the forum anywhere?
Thanks
Rod
Never mind on the bottle emptying already done. A quick drain of the fluid and really hot tap water swirled around the outside bottom melted all the wax in a few mins. All drained and soaking in warm soapy water :)
Not sure that is the correct way but it worked lol.
So if converting to glitter lamp, does the spring need to stay in the bottle? Anyone see kirk???
No, the coil needs to be removed. But keep it for future use, you never know when you might need one for globe fixes.
Keith, thanks, the coil is really on the small side but it won't harm anything to put it aside for safe keeping.
Next question, go to five below and empty two contents of their glitter lamps into the bottle and reseal or have kirk do a very nice custom job? Decisions Decisions lol.
I did find that discussion on using the small hose clamps to re-tighten the bottle caps, very cool. I did get the cap off and keep it in good shape.
If a glitter bottle only, can a rubber stopper be used instead if need be? I assume cork is a no go.
No on the cork. I don't have advice for a stopper, maybe the five below globe will have one you can re-use. Or Kirk can supply one of you go through him.

Would just add, make sure you pour the warm wax out somewhere other than your sink, otherwise it'll turn hard again in your drain pipes.

Mark, thanks and yes, I thought of that and all contents were put in very thick plastic bottles that I keep around when I need to dispose of things that should not go down the drain :)
The conversion came out great by the way but where and how do I upload a 33 meg file?
Upload video to youtube and link to OG post
