Hi everyone, I'm new here, and just felt like bragging a bit about the fact that I just got back into Lava Lamps again. :)
When I was growing up (in the 90s), I had 2 16oz Lava Lamps: One blue liquid and yellow wax, and one orange wax and yellow liquid. I also had a pink glitter lamp, and a fiber optics lamp. So yeah, I've been big on all sorts of sparkly, flowy lamps since I was really young. Alas, all of my lamps broke probably a good five or six years ago, so I've been lampless since.
That being said, I've been thinking about getting another one for awhile now, and basically realized that I didn't have anything stopping me now that I'm living on my own with my fiance. So I've been kind of lurking these boards for the past week or so, trying to decide what I would get. I would have preferred a Mathmos lamp, but living in America, it's not as affordable as I'd like. So ultimately, I ended up going to Spencer's and picking out a lamp there. (I settled on the Clear/Red 52oz one.)
When I got there, I did like many of you members had been recommending in other threads, and asked to see the globe before I bought it, since I'd heard about LavaLite producing pretty cloudy globes. Surprisingly, the first globe I looked at was crystal clear, so I took that one. It does have a few very, very tiny wax smudges on the lower edges of the globe that have me a tiny bit dismayed when it's turned on, but it's not terrible. The wax is definitely a different quality than I remember from when I was a kid (more air bubbles if I recall correctly,) but it's much more than I expected for 20 dollars.
The only problem is, I just caught an episode of the Vampire Diaries, where they clearly had the Purple/Yellow lamps displayed, and it REALLY made me start to itch to add another one to my collection! :P

Welcome aboard.
Might I also suggest watching eBay for some vintage american lava lamps.
Even the ones with the white bottle caps are usually very good.
I'll definitely take a few pics of my new lamp, probably tomorrow when I dig the camera out of storage. :)
The only thing that makes me wary about ordering off of ebay is the fear of lamps clouding during shipping. Although, that being said, I've been reading about goo kits, and I've already pretty much decided that I am going to do one someday in the near future.
