Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I finally put a dimmer on one of my used grande's ! SWEET! I absolutely LOVE it . Now I have 'dimmer fever ' and want to put one on ALL  my lamps ! haha Why didn't i do this before ? But dimmers run around $10 for the cheapest I can find :o(  . Anyone have a better hook up for dimmers , either inline or install in base kind ?

Jo, I bought several of the ones you have to plug the lamp into for my 32 and 52 oz. lamps that overheat, but even on Amazon they usually run from $8 to $10.   The ones you install in the base would work great for the Grande.  Brad had a discussion with pics where he installed one.  I'll see if I can find the link for you.

Jo, Lala just posted that entire discussion.  It's the same as the link I just gave you.

the dimmer i got was attached to another very cheap burnt wax lamp so i just switched it ! OH I LOVE IT ! I keep my house pretty warm so my lamps arent very happy sometimes , but with this they are happy campers !!! DO IT Lala ! You will be hooked !

I am shopping around the internet right now trying to find a killer deal on dimmer switches :o(

yes the 32's are great but i can never leave them long without keeping an eye on them :o\

I dont think I have any 32 oz that dont overheat to an extreme level. Im talking strictly my silver streaks and midnights. My wizard flows perfectly, and doesnt get even close to over heating. The blobs stay big and stretchy, and there is occasionally column flow even when left on all day and night. My midnights and silver streak, however, overheat to the point where Im slightly worried about whether its permanently ruining the lamp or not. They get so hot that there is absolutely no lava flow, and some of them detatch from the coil completely. They all have the correct light bulb, frosted 40 watt appliance bulb.

Here's a great deal on dimmers.  I've purchased 6 of them, and they work great:

You should also be able to find a good deal on the dimmers for the Grandes (i.e. knob style dimmer on the base).  I know you can get them through Home Depot, but a local specialty store should be WAY cheaper.  Westek model 6077B - seems to be a much higher quality dimmer than what Lava Lite used in the Heritage Grandes, or maybe I just installed mine better.  Seems to have a much more solid feel as you turn the knob.  Anyways - little white dimmer box next to your Grande base or a discrete knob on the backside of the base.. the choice is yours.  If I wasn't planning on selling my Marley Grande I would install one on there too.  Only potential problem you will encounter is if the electrical leads are riveted to the socket (the case on both of the Grandes I modified).

Giant - save your money, time and effort; they run perfectly and don't need a damn thing.  USA USA USA!

jim - i found that out after modifying a grande base.  grande wires are riveted to the socket whereas giants are screwed in.  it took me a bit longer to connect the dimmer to the grande but it works just as good!  i added that bit to the write-up.
