any tips on how to capture a picture of my lava lamp? my cell phone camera doesn't do it justice. thanks

you need a better camera

one with which you can control white balance, saturation etc.

 

bright wax is more difficult to get a picture of because it glows so much and you will find most people cannot capture a true likeness when the lamp is running, regardless of colour.

1. Use a digital camera that can be set to an indoor lighting exposure setting with the flash off.

2. Put the lamp in a well lit area with bright indoor lighting.

3. Position lamp so there is minimal to no reflections on glass side you are shooting.

4. Let the lamp heat up and start to flow then turn off the lamp light just before taking pictures.

 

You may have to tweak the picture a little with some light fill or shadow fill in any picture editor to balance.
