Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I've been wanting to expand my plasma collection and a few choice items came up recently.  I was able to score 3 out of 4 of the ones I wanted, this is the first to arrive.  This is the original plasma dome reportedly designed by Larry Albright and made and sold by Rabbit Systems.  Radio Shack/Realistic has a version very much like it that came out later.

The most recent plasmapalooza consists of this plasma dome a White Lightning (which came in it's original box), an actual Larry Albright plasma globe (one his few named, numbered retail versions) and a new in the box blue Lava Lightning 2 (just the red one to go to finish out the set!).

I can't wait until the others arrive to join my growing plasma collection.

Congrats on the scores Rich!!!!  It's always exciting to add new lamps to one's collection!!!  Enjoy!!!  I look forward to the rest of your pics!!!

A 16" Lumindisc I scored many months ago was a big win for me.  If you've never experienced a Lumindisc in person you really need to see one in action.  Video doesn't really do them justice.

This plasma dome thing is a little bit scary.  It emits a noticeable ozone smell almost immediately and you need to make sure not to touch any grounded metal while touching the globe.  Ouch!  The more intense settings on the knobs make it really buzz (literally) and it takes a bit of guts to touch it when it is really buzzing.  I wish it had come with the original instruction sheet (if they ever had one).  A Lumindisc can really get freaky too, but the glass is so thick you never really feel that intimidated by them.

Really looking forward to the Larry Albright globe which is on its way to me.  The one I missed out on was a white plasma tube with similar plasma as in the White Lightning but in a narrow and tall glass tube.  It was 28 inches tall!  Got a little too rich for my blood. Oh well, another will pop up at some point.

Ya know Rich, I was really getting depressed when I had to leave certain lamps go on Ebay, but I read on here a post that kind of put things in a better perspective for me.  I laughed at it, but thought to myself, 'how true is this"....I can't remember the whole post or even what it started out as, but it was like.....the lamp can't cure hemorrhoids, or make you rich, yada, yada, it's just a lamp, others will come......something like that, but I thought, "that's right, others will come".  So it turns out that some of the bids that I had to leave alone, well, a few days or weeks down the road and a nicer, cheaper lamp pops up and I'm like ok, now I really don't feel like I totally missed out.  I still remember the thrill though just a few short weeks ago of my 1st 2 vintage lamp wins!!!!  I waited for the mail lady on my front deck ready to attack the mail truck, lol!!!  My first was a pretty nice condition Enchantress, blue liquid white lava, 2nd was my phychedellic blue swirl, and it's weird, but I didn't even notice that it was also blue liquid/white lava!!!  I was so involved in the bidding and I really like the bases on the swirls that I didn't even notice that the color combo was the same, lol!!!  Now my next endeavor......which I am really stoked about is my regoo progect on my 2 52 oz neon globes that I fried!!!  Can't wait to get my goo kit!!!

That lumindisc sounds really cool!!!  I don't think I'd wanna touch it though, lol!!

Craigslist is a great place to find great bargains too and is more immediate satisfaction.

A perfect example of Craigslist wonderfulness!:  http://siouxcity.craigslist.org/for/4555936344.html

I wonder if they'd be willing to ship?

Or how about a Grande for $40:  http://omaha.craigslist.org/hsh/4561597620.html

See, I tried Craigslist and I don't know if I'm not doing it right or what but it asked me to key in my zip code and I'm only getting listings for around my area.  When I typed in lava lamps in the search bar for all over, I came up with nothing.  I'll try again but I have better luck on ebay believe it or not.

A lot depends on how the seller posts their listings on Craigslist.  You can post in just your immediate area or you can post it multiple times in additional surrounding areas.  As a buyer, you can simply search other nearby locations.  There are also tools on line that let you search all of Craigslist but I've found it works only sometimes.  It finds a lot of closed ads.

That was me sharing my Pearls of Wisdom.    http://oozinggoo.ning.com/forum/topics/neat-ebay-sales?commentId=15...

And its worth a repost as I stand by my words.

Maybe its just me, but I have never been upset losing out on a lava lamp.  Its happened to me countless times, and I know I have been "dream crusher", most likely to many of you, on countless occasions as well.  I see it in a number of ways.  First and foremost, its a lava lamp.  Ain't gonna pay your mortgage, make you better looking, get rid of your hemorrhoids, etc.  Its sole purpose in life is to sit there, look wickedly cool and put a smile on your face.  With that being said, how could you be truly upset when losing out on something with purely hedonistic value?

Secondly, patience grasshopper.  There are not too many lamps that I have only seen once on ebay.  You see a lamp today, you will most likely see it on other occasions as well.  Maybe your financial situation will be better months, years from now.  Maybe Mr./Mrs. Deep Pockets will be content and out of the running when it comes up in the future.

OMG Jim, lol, that was such a great post!!!!  After I scored my 1st 2 vintage lamps on ebay I wanted to keep at it, well, being laid off, hubbie just starting work after his lay off, things are kind of tight, so I had to let some things go.  I'm glad I found your post.  I kind of slaughtered it when I tried to explain how it went, lol!!!  Glad you came to the rescue!!  I gotta say, I'm thankful for my 5 lamps that I get to "zone" out to every night.  They all have great flow.  I also have 2 that I am going to regoo which will keep me "entertained" while I await the job search market phone calls.  So thank you for that post....oh and I am a big believer in the KARMA train!!!  so much so I named my staffie Karma!!!

I think that is what so appealing about plasma (and glitter), the gratification is instant (almost instant on glitter), no waiting for them to warm up and flow.

Oh yes, but the old addage says, "all good things are worth their wait"!!!!  hee hee........aaah, glitter, plasma, lava, I luv um all!!!  I'm thinking my next purchase might even be a wave machine someday.....who knows....but my true love is my lava, lol!!!
