This turned up today in the donations at the charity shop where I work as a volunteer.

The only text on lamps reads as.....

"It is unclear where Rovers come from, but there are numerous unconfirmed suggestions that they are related to the globules that drift in the lamps installed around the village".

Having read the text again, further on it reads...

"Although McGoohan recalls that the idea for the mechanical Rovers replacement was triggered by a meteorological balloon he and Williams spotted in the sky, other members of the production team have suggested that the idea came from a BBC documentary about the weather which showed a balloon escaping across a wind swept moor, and by the oily bubbles in a motion lamp on the bar where the post mortem took place".
