Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hello Oozinggoo'ers. I am a French freelance documentary maker and producer creating a series looking at cult items from the 1960s and the 1970s and was looking for stories on why people still today collect lava lamps, and would love to interview people for my upcoming programme.

I was wondering if anyone would like to share their stories with lava lamps and their history as I'd love to get some background for the show and places where I can find vintage lava lamps. Many thanks - Julianna St.Frere

Hi Julianna, welcome to oozinggoo! I hope you have a great time here. Your TV series looks really interesting and it is really nice to see the lamps and their history being celebrated on TV, they were very much something influenced the world in the 1960s, 1970s and the 1990s.

What is known generically as the lava lamp or lampe a lave in France, is a Great British Invention, and was invented in the years leading up to 1963 and first launched in September of 1963. Edward Craven Walker was the inventor of the lava lamp and the founder of Mathmos. Mr Walker's first design was the Astro lamp which started everything and he was an amazing inventor.

If you need any high-res images or examples of lamps that I own then I will be more than happy to freely send these to you to help with your show. You can see more of the history of the lamps at www.flowoflava.com and you will probably want to drop Mathmos an email. Did you know that there was a special lava lamp design called Cosmos that was made for French speaking territories in the vintage years? You may like to feature that in your piece,

Wishing you all the best, - 'baby.
