To date, there's no fix for this problem. It's old, likely over-used wax. I've had several like this.

I cleaned it off so the wax would stay attached. Worse comes to worse I will Goo kit it. I'll keep it original red/yellow. I got it off Craigslist from an elderly couple who got it when they got married in the early 70's. They used it at many parties.
